A note from Marion Porter - Developmental Resource Educator

This is the time in the school year when I always feel that the children are ready for new challenges. They need to be allowed to do things independently: like getting their own snacks out and clearing them away,  putting on their own coats and carrying their own backpacks. They can use their words and ask a teacher or peer for help. The 4's are working on their Kindergarten readiness skills through lots of fun activities. The teachers are aware that each child is unique and that they all meet their developmental milestones at different times and in different ways. Pressuring a child is counterproductive to successful learning. Play based curriculum provides endless literacy and numeracy opportunities on an hourly and daily basis. Young children learn best through play because it is meaningful, engaging, interactive, interesting and enjoyable.

The Essentials of Development:

Emotional Development means developing a full range of emotions, from sad to happy to angry and learning how to handle them appropriately. This leads to deeper qualities – sympathy, caring, resilience, self-esteem, assertiveness and being able to rise to life’s challenges.

Cognitive Development means being able to communicate. To think both creatively and abstractly, to pay attention and to solve problems, and develop keen judgement and a lifelong readiness to learn.

Social Development means being able to make friends and get along with others, work as part of a team and be a good leader, all of which are built on self-confidence, cooperation and trust.

“Readiness” involves 3 key factors:
  •         The task at hand makes sense to the child.
  •         The task builds on prior accomplishments and learning flow.
  •         The child demonstrates a real and visible interest in the task and in the next steps.

Readiness goes hand-in-hand with developmentally appropriate practice.

As we think about Spring and planting gardens remember that a tiny sprout can only learn how to weather life’s challenges with nurturing and support. Resilience comes from the comfort and encouragement we give children in the first years of life. With cuddles, kisses and words of reassurance, little ones discover how to bend when they need to, how to adapt to change and how to bounce back from disappointment. Let’s all help our children stay firmly rooted.

Wow! How time has flown. We have now finished 7 months of preschool and we are excited to be heading into Spring.

In the month of March we were very busy exploring "Easter, Spring and Colours". We used our hands to turn little trays and paint Easter Bunnies with marbles. We used tissue paper, paint and sparkles to decorate paper Easter eggs. We decorated our own Easter Cookies and with face paint, turned ourselves into 'Easter Bunnies'! We spent circle time singing songs about Easter - "Little Peter Rabbit, Hop little bunny and Sleeping Bunnies". We also searched through the Coloured Houses or Easter Eggs for bunnies and eggs and listened to the taped stories "Duck on a Bike" and "The Easter Bunny".

We spent a little time exploring Spring when Vibha brought in a Cherry blossom bough.  We touched it, smelt it and then used our fingers to make our own Cherry Tree.

We are now discovering our colours. We started with our primary colours and using water colours and diffusing paper, watched as red and blue turned to purple or red and yellow turned to orange.  We made flowers and dragon flies with many different colour combinations.

Some of us also made our own stained glass window with cellophane. We listened to the story "Pete the Cat " & "Little Blue & Yellow". We played a matching colour game where we guessed what vegetables belong to which colour and looked around the room to find other colours.

Please continue to send extra clothing as there are some very enthusiastic painters and children who enjoy water play. With the cold weather here, please remember to send warm coats and hats. Our playground is shaded and tends to be cooler earlier in the day.

Just a reminder that if anyone is starting toilet training to let us know. Consistency works the best.

If you have any questions please feel free to speak to any of us, Danielle Vibha, Susan, Stephanie, Sali, Karen & Arsi.

Welcome back everyone! Hope you all had a nice break with family and friends!

March brought some sunshine, and as the children pointed out, birds, flowers, bugs, baby animals and warmer weather. The rising temperatures elevated the general mood too, we loved to spend time outdoors and to discover what we were talking about in the classroom, hands-on. We had a very short time to prepare for Easter, and even less time for our Spring theme, but the children made the best of it. They painted paper eggs, created a duck pond, mastered the use of the eye-dropper, listened to stories about chickens and bunnies, and took turns to pretend to be the Easter bunny hiding eggs. A lot of pre-math/ math, language and communication skills were sharpened by counting and sorting the hundreds of plastic eggs, playing numerous group games (I personally could never come up with all the ideas they came up with!) We endlessly practiced the songs for the Easter Services without much complaint  (and I sing them in my head before I go to sleep, when I wake up, or just at random places, like the Safeway checkout - 'thank you' Rachel!!) All the grown-ups at the preschool are very impressed with how well our little preschoolers remember the songs, even after all the breaks we had, we can't wait for all our families to come and see the children singing up on the stage!

A note from the Treehouse room, class 302 - Gabi and Susan

Spring is finally here! We hope you all enjoyed the Spring Break and spent some time with your family and friends.

March was a very short month, leaving very little time to practice the songs for the Easter Services. Our children in class 302 are at school less time than some of the other 3's classes so they have less time to learn all their songs but they still do so well! Both Spring Break and Easter interrupted the learning process, but they remembered the lyrics and the actions when they came back. It shows how much they have developed since the beginning of the school year, and how fortunate we are with this group of little people. We can't wait for you to see them up on the stage tomorrow!

We had an 'exciting' day with a power outage, we sat on the circle carpet for over 30 minutes, singing with only the emergency lights on, then following the children's suggestion, we did art in the dark, then played in the dark, and took trips down to the washrooms in the dark!!

Celebrating the arrival of spring; our circles were filled with stories, songs and rhymes about plants, flowers, chickens, bunnies, and a very hungry caterpillar. We hid and found tons of plastic eggs every day to be hidden and found again, to be counted, sorted, compared, or shared with friends. We even walked on eggs, and not on the paper kind!

We will be continuing with the spring theme for a little while, learning about  life cycles, butterflies, frogs and weather.

A note from the Treehouse room, class 304 - Stephanie, Gabi, Sousan

Hope everyone enjoyed their spring break! This month was all about spring and Easter. We read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and then we made caterpillars and butterflies for art. We talked about all the different spring changes that are happening and everyone seemed most excited about the flowers growing everywhere and especially the blossom tress! We made hand-print flowers and we grew our own grass.

To get ready for Easter we painted Easter baskets, decorated eggs with tissue paper, and made bunny ear hats. We were so excited to have the Easter bunny come visit us. He hid chocolate eggs all over our classroom and it was so much fun trying to find them all!

The children are coming together very nicely as a whole. With such a small group, they have gotten to know each other very well and have built some really strong relationships with each other. It's really nice to hear the conversations between them as they play.

Next month our theme will be sea life.

A note from the Sunflower room, class 401 - Sali, Stephanie, Karen, Susan and the Treehouse room, class 403 - Stephanie, Estelle, Gabi, Sousan, Karen

Spring has sprung! The days are getting longer and the beautiful sun is up in the sky. This month has been all about spring and Easter. We talked about the different changes we see during the springtime. We talked about how seeds become plants and how that cycle works throughout the year. For art we drew a picture of a plant that grows from a seed.

For Easter we talked about new life. We painted Easter baskets, decorated chocolate egg cookies with icing, traced and cut out Easter eggs and decorated them. We were so lucky to have a special visitor come while we were out of the classroom and he left us a surprise... The Easter bunny came to hide eggs all around our classroom for us to find!

We have also started our journals. Each child will have their own journal that they will draw a picture in each week then tell the teachers their story and we will write it down for them. This gives the children a chance to use their imagination and practice their story telling skills. Some weeks it will be a free topic where they can draw anything they would like and other times it will be more structured. One entry we did was about a story called The Golden Egg Book. We read half of the story at circle and the children had to finish it off in their journal and guess what was inside the egg. Afterwards we read the rest of the story at second circle to see the outcome so they could compare it with their own predictions.

A note from the Sunflower/Rainbow room, class 402 - Arsi, Danielle, Sousan

E is for Easter! What a fun month it has been! We have continued our alphabets and our alphabet box. The children are feeling confident in sharing the items they chose for the box with their friends. Great way for them to take turns sharing a class project and also have a bit of fun at home finding the objects of the assigned letter. We are also nearing the last few turns with Echo. It's been really great hearing what adventures Echo has been on so far!

March also brought us looking into Easter and a bit of spring. During circle, we talked about the signs of spring and what we hear, see, wear, and even smell. The children let their friends know during circle what changes they saw outside.

Before we knew it, we were tracing, cutting and using jello powder to decorate our diffusing paper Easter eggs. This was a great way to keep practicing our fine motor skills and our hand and eye coordination. The eggs smelled yummy with the jello powder designs. Our next Easter art activity was decorating foam cups with crushed eggshells to give it a mosaic look. The children really enjoyed smashing and coloring the shells with watercolors. The best part, of course, was dipping marshmallows into chocolate and then sprinkles. If that wasn't yummy enough, the children even had a surprise visit from the Easter bunny who had hidden chocolate eggs for the children to find. Yummy!  We've also been busy learning our songs for the Easter services!! They sound great!

Moving forward to next month, we will be looking at bugs!!

Just a reminder, although the sun has been shining a bit more, our yard tends to be shady and cool when we go out, so please pack a jacket for your child. We are continuing to practice being more independent by putting on and zipping up our own jackets, opening and closing our own easy to open lunch containers, and pouring our own water into cups. Please continue to encourage your child at home as well for their readiness to kindergarten.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask your teachers.

Valentine fun!
The month of February was a great month for the children and teachers in the Discovery 2's Program. We focused on friends and friendship then celebrated two exciting holidays - Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year. For Chinese New Year we painted on black paper with golden, red and yellow paint. The children each used chop sticks to paint which was an interesting new way of painting. The Rainbow room home corner was transformed into a bakery of love and hearts galore! The children baked, cooked and decorated our play cookies, cupcakes and donuts.

Little Love Bugs!
The Children's artwork was displayed on the walls to decorate and make the classroom festive. A Valentine's party was held in our classroom and as always was a great success! We enjoyed all of the yummy food and were very comfortable in our pajamas! Some of the art that we displayed on the walls was stamping with cookie cutters to make Valentine's decorations as well as other artwork.

The children in this class are all doing so well socially, creatively and building on their independence each day. The teachers have noticed such positive growth in each of the children's abilities and can't wait to explore and learn more as the year continues. Spring is approaching and we are all looking forward to learning about  flowers, Easter and baby animals in the coming weeks.

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 301 - Estelle and Gabi

Hello Everyone!

February was a busy month. We celebrated Chinese New Year and Valentine’s day. We also talked about friendship and feelings, and then moved on to shapes and colours.

At circle time we played group games, name games and had fun learning the shapes and colours in French and English. We talked about how all types of feelings are OK such as anger, sadness, happiness and feeling scared. The children are also learning how to express their feelings in a positive way and about the need for personal space. We teach this by talking about how everyone has a bubble around themselves and it is OK to say "You are in my bubble, I need more space" etc. This is especially helpful at circle time, and the children are getting quite good at expressing themselves verbally rather than physically.

Another big hit at circle was “Pete the cat” which was read in book form and acted out with felt pieces.
The children then got to make their own Pete the cat at art time!

We said goodbye to Sara as she has moved to Coquitlam and welcome to our class a new friend, Toby!

The children are beginning to learn their songs for the Easter service. They  can’t wait to put on a great show for their families.

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 302 - Susan and Gabi

The class of 302 had a very exciting February. Some of the highlights that took place within the month was celebrating  Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day. For Chinese New Year we displayed chop sticks, Chinese banners, lanterns and red envelopes. Each of these items allowed the children to create their own play and explore a new culture.

Valentine's week was a great success and the children were so engaged in celebrating this fun holiday. Within the home corner the importance of love and care was emphasized with its transformation into a veterinary office. The class took care of the sick animals with such love and kindness. This creative play warmed the hearts of all of us at the preschool. Now that spring is on its way we have already started discussing Easter and the class has started practicing for the Easter services! We can't wait to perform for you all, and begin to enjoy the season of spring.

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 304 - Stephanie, Gabi, Sousan

Lots of hearts filled the classroom this month. We made collage hearts with glitter and sequins, decorated diffusing paper hearts with watercolour, and decorated our Valentine bags with lots of little hearts. At circle we talked about friendship and feelings.

We also, spent one day talking about Chinese New Year. We talked about the different traditions that happen for this special day. We looked at the Chinese calendar and learned about how a different animal represents each year and that this was the year of the monkey and for art we decorated red paper lanterns.

Next we moved on to talking about transportation. We talked about all things that take us from one place to another place. We spent each day talking about a different type of transportation and then creating it at the art table. We used cars in paint to make tracks on a paper, made rocket-ships, boats, and paper airplanes. The children had a lot of fun flying the planes in the classroom once they were done!

For the month of March we will be talking about spring and Easter.

A note from the Sunflower Room - Class 401 - Sali, Stephanie, Karen, Susan

The month of February brought with it Valentine’s day. We talked about friendship, kindness and of course... Hearts! The children decorated bags for their friends to place Valentine cards in and learned about giving and receiving while handing out the cards. The children folded paper and cut out half a heart shape then saw how it unfolded into a heart, then they decorated it.The children very much enjoyed their Valentine’s Day party. It was wonderful to see the children dressed in their formal wear. We decorated the classroom as a fancy restaurant. The children had their own menus and enjoyed choosing their snacks.

Sense of touch!
After Valentine’s day we discovered the five senses. For the sense of sight, we planted grass and watched it grow, for touch we made collages out of different textures, for hearing, we played sound games , for smell we had different scents in jars and the children enjoyed tasting many different foods: salty, sweet, bitter and sour!

We have set up a listening centre in the classroom where the children can listen to an audio book or play a sound game with a friend.

We have started our Kindergarten Readiness program which is usually on Mondays. The children work in small groups to develop skills such as letter and number recognition, how to write their name and sequencing and sorting activities.

We are looking forward to seeing you all at the Skating party on Friday March 11th.

A note from the Sunflower/Rainbow Room - Class 402 - Danielle, Arsi, Sousan

February has been a busy month as we have continued with our Kindergarten Readiness.
I is for Iguana!

We started with celebrating Chinese New Year and we discovered that it was the year of the Monkey. We learnt how to say 'Gung Hey Fat Choy' and that 'Nihao' means 'Hello' in Chinese. We went on a "red walk" and danced with streamers to Chinese Music. We practiced our fine motor skills by cutting and painting our own lanterns and learning how to write Chinese characters. Next we watched a video about Chinese New Year, in which we learnt some Chinese words and new types of food. We also listened to the story “Goldy Luck and the 3 Panda's”.

For Valentine's Day we had a lovely Red/Pink & White themed party with yummy food supplied by our parents and some lovely Valentine's Day notes for friends. We reminded everyone how to 'love' our families and friends and to continue to fill everyone's buckets. We talked about what we love and for art we cut out our names to make a 'Heart Shaped Name Puzzle'. We also made a lovely Valentine's collage.

We then moved into exploring our ABC's.We are learning what words start with each letter, how they sound, the shape of them, how to write them and encouraging them to think of their own words for the “Letter of the Day'. We have done this by introducing the 'Alphabet Box'. We now explore a letter at home and share it with their friends the next day in class. We are having a lot of fun with tracing, cutting and decorating apples, painting balloons, baking cupcakes and turning D's into ducks, E's into elephants and making paper plate foxes (Thanks Nicole, Wyatt's mum).

In the next few weeks we are discussing spring and Easter. We will continue to work on the Alphabet and start our journey into our journals.

Just a little reminder that we are here for 4 hours, so it is better to pack more food than not. They can always take it home to snack on later! Also please continue to send extra clothing as there are some very enthusiastic painters and children who enjoy water play. With the cold weather here, please remember to send warm coats and hats. Our playground is shaded and tends to be cooler earlier in the day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to either Danielle, Arsi or Sousan.

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 403 - Estelle, Stepanie, Gabi, Karen, Sousan

Hello Everyone!

For the month of February, we celebrated Valentine’s day and Chinese New Year, we also talked about the five senses, our health and continued with our veterinarian theme in the home corner as it was very popular!

We talked about healthy foods and made a food chart with the different food groups.
Textured art collage.
We also made a shared fruit salad, which covered the taste sense. The children enjoyed using their sense of smell to smell some different essential oils such as lavender and tea tree oil (not so much). They liked guessing by touch what materials were in the balloons (rice and beans etc.) and making art with different textures. At circle the children enjoyed guessing the sounds with a sound CD.

Since we have two practicum students to help us, we decided to walk to the duck pond behind the library on a Friday afternoon. The children quite enjoyed this and were excited to feed the ducks and see one of their classmate’s house along the way!

The children have started to learn their songs for the Easter service and we look forward to seeing you there.

The children will begin journaling after spring break. This is another step we do for kindergarten readiness. The children will draw a picture and then tell us what to write about their picture. They will bring home their journals at the end of the year.

Penguins, Pets and Didgeridoos! January 2016

A note from Jen McEneany - Coordinator

January whizzed by in a flurry of snowmen, penguins and all things winter around the preschool. The classrooms have all felt so warm and inviting with the cold, wet weather outside and it's always great to walk through the preschool and observe the children talking, playing and creating all together and also to see how grown up all our preschoolers have gotten since September.

We have been busy over the past several weeks with registration, touring new families and placing everyone into their classes for next year. If you didn't end up receiving your first choice of class, please don't despair! We still have 7 months until September and a lot can change during that time. We will continue to let you know where you are on the wait-list for classes until you asked to be removed from that list.

We still have some spaces available in our 2's programs as well as our 302, 402 and afternoon classes so please let your friends, neighbours (people at the coffee shop!) know what a fabulous place we are! As always, most of our new families come to us because of referrals from you. So a HUGE thank you to everyone for that!

A note from Marion Porter - Developmental Resource Educator

With each month that passes I can see the development in social skills in all the children. Play is a central part of the lives of young children. Playing is living and living is playing. Play may be spontaneous (free-flexible, it is unplanned by adults) or organized (structured- may consist of some structure provided in terms of materials and equipment or directions given by adults). Adults should not interfere because play is determined by the personality of the player, not the desires of the adult. It may involve one child or groups of children. It may be built around toys and tools or may involve nothing more than the child's imagination.
A play period may last a few minutes or go on for days.

Two and three year-olds usually play alone or with adults; this is termed Solitary Play.  As the child grows older they will move into Parallel Play which occurs when a child plays side by side with peers, with some interaction, but without direct involvement with them. As the number of relationships outside the home increases, the child's ability to play with other children develops further. At this point the child may engage in Associative Play, which may take the form of a child participating in group games. Eventually, as they grow comfortable with their social ties, young children begin to talk about, plan and carry out play activities with other children. This type of play is called Cooperative Play. The needs of children are met through creative play. They learn about themselves, others and the world around them through their play activities, therefore Play Dates are a great way for children to interact socially with their peers and build new bonds of friendship.

A note from our Discovery 2's - Vibha, Danielle, Karen, Susan, Stephanie, Sali, Arsi

This month we have been talking, reading, playing and creating everything Winter!. Where do I begin….? As you come down the stairs and go through the doors on the left side of the wall you will notice snowy white owls and ice fishing. The children found it funny that the feathers were sticking to their fingers more than they were to the paper while they made those! Working with liquid glue can be a bit overwhelming
for the wee ones but also helps them to become comfortable with different textures.

Anyone ever painted with coloured ice? We did! Simply put water and tempera watercolour in an ice-cube tray with a tooth pick for a handle. Once they are frozen children can use them to paint a picture. Our polar bear art had the bears surrounded by snow, the penguins were pieced together in all sorts of ways and the snowflake collage glittered so nicely. The water table had everything from ‘icebergs to snow’ with the animals too.

Circle time was filled with the stories, Polar bear, polar bear what do you see? That’s not my penguin. In the snow, Under my hat, Bear snores on, Big bear, little bear, just to name a few. Felt stories about snowmen, penguins, polar bears and lost mittens. Action songs and some yoga too. We hope your children enjoyed our theme.

Here we come February! Love, friendship, feelings and all things Valentines!

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 301 - Estelle and Gabi

January for most people is a dreaded “grey” month, cold, slow in businesses, not nearly as exciting as the days in December leading up to Christmas. Well, not in our field ladies and gentlemen! The children came back to class with fresh enthusiasm, eagerness to learn and with happy grins on those adorable faces to great their friends and teachers after the winter break.

We learned about winter, winter animals, created snowy pictures with penguins and winter wonderlands with snowmen. We also celebrated Chinese New Year. In our art projects and at Circle time we incorporated more basic math and science concepts too to challenge the children more. Day by day they are more capable to do many things on their own, and we encourage them to be more independent with self-help and communication skills. Problem solving is a great challenge even for us grown-ups. We have been working hard on letting the children resolve differences, encouraging them to talk to each other before they ask us teachers to help them ‘correct’ another child.

February is the sweetest, most loving month of all, good reasons for us to explore ways to be gentle, helpful, caring, generous friends. We will also share stories and ideas on manners and feelings which are great topics to strengthen the bonds between our little people and to remind them how great they all are!

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 302 - Gabi and Susan

January has been a very fun and  successful month! The class of 302 has been learning about the season of winter, exploring through science activities and creating many beautiful art pieces.

Each month our house corner transforms in to a new and exciting play haven. This month we focused our home corners theme on the importance of education and learning by turning this area into a school. Our class played school with a large writing easel, a world globe and created felt stories that could be performed to the "class". The children had great fun in the house corner all month long.

The children in 302 have been busy learning about the season of winter. The first week we focused more on weather and what snow, ice and frost is. Many toys were available within the classroom such as polar bears, mini hockey rinks and winter  themed puzzles and games. Unfortunately (or fortunately!) we did not see any real snow in the neighborhood however, we did have “snow” in the water table for much of January.  A highlight for everyone was the exploration of ice. The ice was coloured with food colouring to give a more exciting effect. The children were able to watch the ice melt, break apart the large pieces and slide the ice chunks around on the trays. This exploration gave the children the opportunity to see what ice is all about through each of their senses.

At the art table in January, many exciting and interesting artworks were made. Gabi helped the kids make snowflakes with puffy paint and sparkles which gave each piece a unique effect. Susan lead a craft where the children made bears in their snow caves to go along with the days theme of hibernation. Many cute winter creatures were made such as penguins, polar bears and snowmen. Each child took their time in creating each master piece which brings so much joy to the teachers.

Our class is now enjoying the fun colours of pink, red and purple of February as we focus on Valentines, love and friendship!

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 304 - Stephanie, Gabi, Sousan

We hope everyone enjoyed their winter break! We are so happy to be back and to see the children's smiling faces as they enter the classroom.

For the month of January we focused on the theme of winter. At circle we talked about the different things we see during the winter time and we talked about what we like to do in the winter time. For art we painted winter pictures with white paint and Q-tips, made penguins, snowmen, did ice cube paintings, decorated mittens with puffy paint, and splatter painted snowflakes.

The children have really settled in and are starting to build relationships with the other children in the classroom. We can really see a difference in their play and development since the beginning of the year. A lot more conversations going on and they're building on their play and becoming more creative and challenging themselves.

For February we are talking about friendship and Valentine's Day.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to one of the teachers.

A note from the Sunflower Room - Class 401 - Sali, Stephanie, Karen, Susan

We hope everyone had a nice and relaxing winter break. We are all excited to be back and get into the routine of things. We also noticed that the children were happy to be back to preschool with their eager voices and laughter in the hallways as they waited for the door to be open. It's always such a pleasure to see their bright smiling faces as they come into the classroom.

As the children got settled into the routine again, we decided to bring a little bit of winter into the classroom. We thought this would be fitting because of the little bit of snow we got the day we came back. We created winter pictures using different utensils in paint and we made diffusing paper snowflakes with watercolours.

Our big theme of the month was talking about the veterinarian hospital and different types of pets. The children were very interested in learning all about a vet and the different kinds of pets they took care of. We turned the home corner into a veterinarian hospital and the children had a great time pretending to be veterinarians and taking care of all the animals. They all worked together and took turns (most of the time!). For art we made vet bags with a variety of different art materials to represent the different first aid supplies, decorated dog bones, made paper bag dog puppets, cats, and drew a picture of a pet we would want if we could have one. To end off this theme we had a chance to visit the veterinarian hospital in Edgemont village. We saw all
the different things they do, such as x-rays, surgical procedures, and grooming. The children also had a chance to listen to their heartbeat on a special machine that they put on their wrist. We also got to meet a pet of one of the workers there. It was a yellow lab. She was so friendly and we all enjoyed petting her!

We have started working on our kindergarten readiness skills with our fours. Each week we will pick a certain area to see where the children are at and if they do need extra help we will continue to work on those skills and incorporate them into their play. Along with kindergarten readiness we have been getting the children to become more independent in their self-help skills such as putting on their own jackets, pouring their own water at snack, and opening their own snacks or asking a friend to help them. Our next themes will be Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, friendship, and feelings.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to one of the teachers.

A note from the Sunflower/Rainbow Room - Class 402 - Danielle, Arsi, Sousan

As we begin our kindergarten readiness in January and onward, we would like to remind our parents to facilitate the children in the following areas:

1) putting on jackets by themselves and zipping up and down
2) opening/closing lunch containers (easy to open lids)
3) using cups instead of straws/water bottles (we are practicing pouring our own water)
4) practicing writing their name
5) cutting straight lines on paper, holding scissors properly

These are some of the things we practice which will help the children when they head off to kindergarten.

We've also been busy talking about winter, Australia, and Robert Munsch. For our winter topic, we looked at the story by Jan Brett called "The Mitten". We made our own paper mittens with the various animals from the story and we also made some very realistic snow with the following recipe:

1lb Baking soda
Shaving cream (unscented and organic if possible)
2 drops lavender essential oil

1. Let the children pour 1lb of baking soda into a large bowl.
2. Spray shaving cream (we used a good sized handful, but you should experiment with the amount)
3. Let the children knead the "snow" it will start forming almost immediately.

Upon Danielle's return from Australia, we had an opportunity to discuss some interesting things. Danielle brought in a real didgeridoo and we made our own and played them too. We also made boomerangs and koalas.

Our next adventure was the work of Robert Munsch. We dove into 6 of his books: Thomas' Snowsu
it, Just One Goal, Deep Snow, Makeup Mess, Smelly Socks, and Pyjama day. We learned that Robert liked to write funny and silly stories and that he is an author. For art, we made snowsuits, colored with ice, used straws to blow a painted ball to make a picture, salad spun smelly socks, collaged a picture of a face with makeup, and cut out and decorated pyjamas. We also played hockey in the gym and had fun doing yoga!

For the month of February, we will be touching on Chinese New Year, friendship/love, and beginning our alphabets. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask.

A note from the Treehouse Room - 403 - Estelle, Stephanie, Gabi, Karen, Sousan

We hope everyone had a lovely winter break. It is so nice getting back into the swing of things again. The children have grown so much in so little time. It is amazing how fast they grow when you don't see them for a couple weeks!

For the first week back we talked about winter at circle time. For art we did ice cube painting, puffy paint mittens, and diffusing paper snowflakes with watercolours.

Next we moved on to talking about veterinarians and pets. At circle we talked about a veterinarian hospital and the different things they do there for the pets. For art we made paw prints by dipping different animals in paint and walking them across a sheet of paper, made paper towel roll pets, made cats, drew a picture of what kind of pet we would want and coloured dog bones and made paw prints from painting our hands. To end this theme, we had a chance to visit the veterinarian hospital in Edgemont village. We saw all the different things they do there such as x-rays, surgical procedures, and grooming. The children also had a chance to listen to their heartbeat on a special machine that they put on their wrist. After our visit, we decided to change the home corner of our classroom in a veterinarian hospital. The children had such a great time pretending to be a vet and taking such good care of the sick animals. Another highlight of this theme was when Kaiden and his mom brought in 4 of their chickens to the preschool to share with us. It was so neat touching them and seeing how different they all looked. Who knew chickens felt so soft! Thank you again for bringing in your chickens! They were a huge hit.

We have started working on kindergarten readiness with our four year-olds. Each week we will pick a certain area to see where the children are at and if they do need extra help we will continue to work on those skills and incorporate them into their play. Along with kindergarten readiness we have been getting the children to become more independent by putting on their own jackets, pouring their own water and opening their own snacks at snack time or asking a friend to help them.

We are currently working on Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, friendship, and feelings.
