May 2018

"'Tis like the birthday of the world,
When earth was born in bloom;
The light is made of many dyes,
The air is all perfume:
There's crimson buds, and white and blue,
The very rainbow showers
Have turned to blossoms where they fell,
And sown the earth with flowers."
-  Thomas Hood

DISCOVERY TWOS - Arsi, Brita, Danielle, Susan & Vibha

All aboard the Discovery 2 's train! This month,  the children explored the different modes of transportation, such as buses, cars, planes, trains,  trucks,  and boats!

For Art, the children painted a huge school bus and used it in housekeeping to travel far! We painted stencils of boats and trains. The 2 's made sailboats out of paper plates and decorated them. We created a track print with car wheels and paint.

At circle time, the children identified some modes of transportation and sang songs like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat , Hurry, Hurry, Drive the Fire Truck and Down By the Station ". The children experimented with a  yoga boat pose. We rowed our boats to the other shore and drove our fire trucks to put out a fire!

Please remember to help your child's gross motor development,  by allowing them to practice walking up and down the stairs by themselves!

301 - Estelle & Susan

Spring is finally here! April was a busy month with the children practicing and learning their songs for the Easter Service and what a wonderful job they did!

This past month we talked about Spring, planting and farms. The children enjoyed making pigs in the mud, flowers, lambs and ducks. After practicing for our services, the children could go back to old favorites such as Old MacDonald Had a Farm and Five Little Ducks. The children are also busy working on a surprise for Mother’s Day and are proud of their accomplishments.

Just a word about our arts and crafts. We do both kinds of arts. One where the children can freely explore with different art materials such as paint, glue, sponges, finger painting etc. The children are free to do what they want and it may not look like much to us as adults but the children are enjoying the process and are proud of their work. The other one is more of a Language Art activity such as a cutout of a pig that goes with our theme. We usually explain how to do the art and have a model. The children also enjoy this and also have some freedom in how they do the art. Next we have a Make It Table where children can use the materials offered on the table or on the shelf to make free art and by using their imaginations. They can cut, draw, trace or glue it whatever way they like, all the while practicing their fine motor skills.

The children are growing and maturing and getting ready for the 4’s. They are using their words to better communicate with each other and us, they can put their jackets on by themselves or are at least trying to, as well as many other things.

This past week we have experienced beautiful weather and the children have finally been able to enjoy the sandbox. Please remember to send a hat and to put sunscreen on your child for the really sunny days.

302 - Carol, Karen, Brita & Lisa

Hello Everyone.
I thought I should introduce myself as the new teacher in 302. My name is Carol Sutherland, and although I'm originally from North Vancouver, for most of my career I have worked in Scotland. I have a Special Education background but for the last 15 years I've been in a Preschool setting. I'm really enjoying getting to know the children at St. Catherine's Preschool, and must thank all the staff for being so helpful and welcoming.
Carol

April started with final preparations and rehearsals for the Easter Service, and then of course, the big day arrived. The children were so excited to be in the church, singing their songs, dancing, and waving to family and friends.

For the month of April we've been focusing on Farms and Farm Animals. We've planted seeds and watched them come up, and we drew plants growing from seeds. We've painted and decorated tractors, horses, ducks sheep and pigs.

At the beginning of the month we had lots of days inside, but today we were outside playing in the sun and sand, and it was actually warm. It's official, Spring is Here!

Wow, after having 3 months off I was amazed to see how much the boys have matured & grown.  I can see that friendships are developing, their listening is improving and their understanding of new concepts has increased.
We have been very busy this month continuing learning our Alphabet.  The Alphabet Box is a huge hit.  It encourages the boys to think about the letter they have been given and what words go with it. The sharing at Circle Time is a huge confidence booster as they try to get their friends to guess the word.

We spent the first week of April learning about Spring alongside practicing for our Easter Services.  We grew our own alfalfa sprouts from  seeds to a plant.  Did anyone eat theirs?

Following Spring and a great Easter Service we went into ‘Bugs”.  We read 10 Lucky Ladybugs and listened to the felt story “The Hungry Caterpillar". We used water colours & diffusing paper to create our own butterflies. We also traced a Beetle and decorated it with tissue paper.

We then moved onto Dinosaurs.  That was a lot of fun. We discovered that you can have two types of dinosaurs – Plant or Meat eating Dinosaurs. For art we used crayons & water color to make a fossil print of a Triceratops.  We decorated T-Rex’s, used dinosaur stencils to make a hat and used our hand prints to make our own dinosaur.  We become Paleontologists and used a hammer/ chisel and a brush to find our own Dinosaur Fossil.  We played ‘What’s the Time Mr Dinosaur?’ and danced to the ‘Dino Pokey’. We even helped a paleontologist find fossils outside in the playground.  We were very busy exploring and discovering all about dinosaurs.

We will now move onto Mother’s Day.

304/403 - Estelle, Karen, Rosie & Laura

Hello parents. Hello Spring! Finally some nice weather to enjoy our outside time.

For the month of April the children were busy practicing for the Easter Service and what a wonderful little group of singers they were. We also talked about Spring, planting, fairy tales and nursery rhymes. The children really enjoyed the classics such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs in different forms such as CD stories and with felt pieces.

As the weather gets nicer we would like to spend more time outside or going on field trips. The children really enjoyed the visit to the duck pond and seeing the turtles was the highlight. They also enjoyed eating snack in the park and playing in the playground. Please remember to send a hat and to put sunscreen on your child for the sunny days.

Just a word about our art activities. We have three different kinds. One is the Make It Table where the children are free to create and explore with the materials on the table and shelf, such as collage, glue sticks, scissors, felts and crayons.
Then we have a Language Art which is more like a craft and goes with our theme like a cut out of the three bears. There is usually a model to follow. And lastly there is a more exploratory art such as using different medians and materials, such as sponges, eyedroppers or paint rollers and the children are free to explore and create however they like. The children enjoy all three kinds and are proud of their work no matter what it looks to us as adults. For the Card Project, we used the last method of art as we wanted it to fully look and be their art.

The children are also hard at work on making a surprise for Mother’s Day and are excited to bring it home.

THE RESOURCE OFFICE - Marion

Welcome to May.   April was a busy month around the preschool.  The children worked hard on their songs for the Easter Services, especially for the “Rockin Robin” song and dance.  We hope everyone enjoyed the “Tea” afterwards.

As I go through the class rooms I am noticing a different energy.  The 2s are playing with their peers in small groups.  They are sharing and using their words and following directions and transitioning from one activity to another with just a little verbal encouragement.  They are going up and down the stairs independently while holding the railing.  Their self-help skills are improving and it is great to see how many of them have mastered toileting. Yeah! Please help them build their self-confidence by allowing them to try to do things by themselves with supervision.

Meanwhile, the 3s are demonstrating their keen awareness of how to interact with peers and how they can play together cooperatively.  Circle time is more of a time of sharing and learning about new things.  Their attention span has increased and they are now able to complete more complex tasks.

Kindergarten, here come the 4s!   The children are demonstrating that they are ready for new challenges.  Parents can help with the transition to Kindergarten by:
  • Talking with your child about the impending changes
  • Helping you child master many self-help skills
  • Encouraging your child to ask for help when needed
  • Allowing your child to practice working and playing independently
  • Helping your child follow directions
  • Helping your child learn his/her full name, address and phone number
  • Teaching your child about rules and how important they are.

Our 30 caterpillars will be arriving May 8th and will reside in the Tree House Room.  All the children will have an opportunity to see them as they pass through the stages of development into Painted Lady butterflies.  We will release them into the Memorial Garden in early June.

“Oink, Moo! How Do You Do?  The Summer Program still has a some spaces in the afternoons.

DISCOVERY TWOS - Arsi, Brita, Danielle, Susan, Vibha

We hope you all had a wonderful spring break.  Welcome back Danielle.  A huge thank you to Marion for all her help and support while Danielle was recovering from her injury.

What a fun, busy and exciting month of March we had talking about farm animals.  Here are few of our art activities that the children really enjoyed: Group art painting the big red barn, pigs in the mud with brown paint and coffee grinds, glittery ducks, paper plate cows and gluing cotton balls on sheep.

At circle time we sang many farm animal songs with our favourite being Old MacDonald Had a Farm where  the children got so excited naming animals and making the sounds.  Our 2s enjoyed Cows in the Kitchen, Big Red Barn and Old MacDonald Had a Truck books.  We also did some yoga poses: cat, cow, front and butterfly poses.

Last week of March we focused on Easter.

Over the past few weeks we have noticed that our little twos are growing up to be great little threes.  We are seeing them work so well together.  Their play is starting to incorporate more and more children.  As teachers, we are always looking for ways to bring new and exciting experiences to the classroom, to enhance this process.  The most exciting area is Language Development and the blossoming of speech.  Another interesting development is the beginning of pretend play- playing with dolls, dishes and dress-up clothes.

Some Ideas for Parents:

Read aloud to children everyday.  Simple story lines are best.

Let children help you with simple chores such as picking up toys or putting clothes in the laundry basket.  Encourage them to name things that you are using.

Add new information to what a child is saying "Yes, that's a blanket, a soft warm blanket.

Give clear and simple choices.  "Do you want to drink milk or juice?"

As always, please come and talk to us if you have any concerns.

301 - Estelle & Susan

Happy Spring everyone!

March has been a very successful month here in 301. We were able to celebrate the beginning of spring. We created caterpillars out of egg cartons and then butterflies from coffee filters. We enjoy using recycled materials here in the classroom to teach the students about reusing and caring for our environment.
Speaking of environment, the classroom and school is looking particularly spring like. Please take the time to look at your children's art which is displayed on both the classroom boards and hallway boards.

On our last day before Spring Break we celebrated St Patrick’s Day by stamping with marshmallows on to green shamrocks. This yummy treat was a fun way to cap off our last day.

Our school was closed for one week which allowed all of us to relax and take some time to enjoy the upcoming season. The Easter services are just around the corner so our class has been practicing songs and actions. We are very excited to present our hard work to the parents and families at our Easter services! We are looking forward to seeing you all there!

302 - Karen, Carol, Brita & Lisa

For the month of March we talked about all things to do with Easter. We decorated paper eggs, real eggs, made baskets for our Easter egg hunt and made paper plate bunny masks.

On the 29th, the Easter Bunny paid us a visit and hid chocolate eggs for the children to find. Each child found 3 eggs and they could hardly contain themselves as I read the letter from the E.B. that was left on our classroom door.

We have started singing songs in music for our Easter Service that will be held on April 10th in the Church at 10:30 am with a Tea to follow in the gym. The Tea is a great social time to sit and chat with other parents while enjoying tea and cucumber sandwiches.

We would like to welcome our two new teachers to our class: Carol and Lisa. Please come and introduce yourself.

We hope you all had an enjoyable Spring Break and a Happy Easter.

401 - Karen & Rosie

Welcome back to our 401 blog.

We focused on letters and numbers for a portion of this month. Our room was full of different games, books, puzzles and many more things pertaining to a better understanding of letter and numbers that we use everyday. We will continue our Kindergarten readiness till the end of the year so please let us know if you have any questions about this program.

Thank you to those children who attended our traditional skating party at Harry Jerome. It was great to see you there on the ice. We hope everyone got to enjoy a cookie and some hot chocolate.

We hope you enjoyed your week off for Spring Break as we did. Upon our return, the Easter Bunny came to St. Catherine’s and hid eggs around our room. It was so cute to see how excited the children were getting as Rosie read the note that the Easter Bunny had left.

For the month of April, we will be talking about Spring babies, seeds, planting, growing and preparing for our Easter Service held on Wednesday the 11th @ 10:30am in the Church with a special Tea afterwards in the gym.

402 - Arsi, Danielle & Rosie

Graduation is just around the corner, so we’ve stepped up our kindergarten readiness this month. We have been learning our alphabet and what sound(s) each letter makes. We have been tracing the letters each week by using dot to dot or following numbers. By doing so, we have also started to use our pincer grip to write. It is really important for the boys to practice this grip at home as well for this will help them when they begin writing more in kindergarten. Furthermore, this allows them to use their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination when it comes to other activities. We would like to encourage parents to keep practicing the letters at home. This may be in the form of dot to dot tracing letters or just pointing out letters you may see around the house/grocery store (on a toy box, sign, poster etc). When it feels like a game, it’s more fun to learn!

The boys have also worked really hard on the letters of their names and writing their names. We are encouraging them to write their own name on their art at school. This can also be extending at home by drawing, painting, or even printing on a birthday card. A fun activity is writing their name in shaving cream on a cookie sheet! (Easy clean up too!)

Some of the activities we did to incorporate the alphabet this month:
*find the matching upper and lower case letters
*guess which letter is missing
*find the friend with the matching upper\lower case letter
*think of a word that starts with the letter of the day during attendance

Some of the books we read:
*Egg *Billy Goats Gruff *Go Helicopter Go
*Elephant’s Story *My Dad is a Giant
*Friendshape *The Little Red Hen

We also had Patty do some great art with the boys as part of her practicum. She has had the boys trace, draw, paint, sponge, and they even used eggshells to make various animals starting with the letter of the day. The boys were super busy!

This month we also said goodbye to Echo as he went back to his family. It was so much fun sharing all the wonderful adventures with our friends at school. Thank you families for taking such good care of Echo!

We hope all the families that came out for our 4’s skating party had a fun time! It’s such a great
event for our families to spend some time on the ice and than warm up with some yummy hot
chocolate!

After Spring Break, we hopped our way into Easter! We painted paper plates and made them into our Easter baskets! You can’t have Easter without decorating eggs! Furthermore, we had a special visit from the Easter Bunny who left us some treats to hunt! What a fun time! We would like to wish all our families a Hoppy Easter!

In the upcoming weeks, we will continue to work on our alphabet and other aspects of
kindergarten readiness! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to talk to us!

304/403 - Estelle, Karen, Rosie & Susan

Greetings parents of 403. We know March is behind us but lets recap the fun stuff we did.

We talked about Friendship and Easter. For art we made a paper flower picture, Easter baskets, chicks coming of eggs and we decorated paper eggs and real eggs.

The Easter Bunny came by and hid chocolate eggs in our playground and the children we so excited!

We are presently preparing for our Easter Service that the children will be performing on April 11th at 10:30 am in the Church with a Tea to follow in the gym. The Tea is a great time to sit and socialize with other parents while enjoying tea and cucumber sandwiches.

We hope you all had a relaxing Spring Break and a Happy Easter.

MUSIC - Rachel

The month of March has been spent preparing for our Easter Services in April. We have been learning lots of new songs about all thing Spring, and have also been practicing the moves to a very special dance!

We can’t wait to show off all our hard work on April 10th and 11th and celebrate our success together with a Tea Party.

If you are reading this sentence, please make a comment below and let us know what class your child is in and they will win a small prize!

RESOURCE OFFICE - Marion

Hope everyone had a nice Spring Break and a lovely Easter.

We are looking forward to our Services on the 10th and 11th.  Rachel started teaching the children their songs in March and the teachers have been rehearsing at circle time.  A special Tea will be served following each Service for the families and friends.

We are getting into Spring and learning about new life.  I have our 30 caterpillars on order and hopefully they will arrive early May and be ready for release early June.

I have been talking with the teachers and spending time in the various classrooms.  I have been observing lots of cutting with scissors and printing with pencils and markers.

The 4s are busy in the classrooms counting, spelling, sequencing and matching.  The 2s and 3s are learning to verbally express their needs.  It is important to acknowledge your child’s attempts to communicate with you.  You can model language for them and ask open ended questions.  Always give them some time to process your request and to respond.  Following through with expectations is important and teaches your child that there are consequences for their actions.

DISCOVERY TWOS - Arsi, Brita, Marion, Vibha

February was a snowy but fun month. The children in the two's program enjoy partaking in the theme of friendship and love.
Our highlight of the month was our adorable Valentine's Day party. The children always enjoy eating party food and celebrating in our classroom. The classroom was decorated with hearts and the colours pink and red.

To encourage friendship and love, the children created a friendship hand collage which is displayed in our classroom. This activity promoted teamwork, social interactions and creativity.

Other art activities we engaged in was our "Love You to Pieces" project and tissue paper art.

We also brought our theme into Circle Time with the twos. We taught the students how to say "I Love You" in sign language, we read "Kiss, Kiss" and we listened to a tape story called "Special Friends".

Toward the end of February we celebrated Chinese New Year. We took this day to show the children traditional Chinese pictures, sang songs and painted with chop sticks.

The twos teachers want to thank the parents that contributed to our Valentine's Day party. It is always very much appreciated!

CLASS 301-Estelle and Susan

For the month of February our themes were Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, Friendship and Feelings.

The children enjoyed decorating their Valentine’s bags, drawing and collaging on paper dolls and decorating heart shapes. We also talked about whom we love such as family and friends.

For Chinese New Year we talked about what we do to prepare for Chinese New Year such as cleaning and decorating and that this year is The Year of the Dog. The children made paper bag dragons, then had a parade in the class and were pleased to receive their red envelopes.
Next we talked about feelings like happiness and sadness and how to express them. We moved on to reminders about using our words to ask for a turn or when we don’t like something. Sometimes the children talk about best friends and then other children feel excluded. We talked about how we are all friends at preschool even though we sometimes like to play with different people and that all children are welcome in all areas (block corner, home corner etc.) unless there is a space issue and then we take turns.
For the Card Project the children painted with small paintbrushes and tissue paper. We hope you will be pleased with the cards when they come out. The children took extra time for their paintings and took inspiration from an art book of Renoir.

Next up...we are starting to practice for the Easter Services!

And don't forget to say hi to our practicum student Patty from Capilano University

CLASS 302 - Karen, Carol and Brita

Hello Parent’s of 302! So glad you checked out our Blog!

Every time I write I can’t believe that another month has gone by! Goes well with the saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun”!

February was a busy month with lots of different activities. We focused on Friends and Feelings which took us to group art projects, stories and felt rhymes about what it means to be a friend. Music to my ears when we hear “Let’s take turns”, “Can I have a turn after you?”, or “We can do it together”.

We have noticed that there is a lot more parallel and group play since we came back in January. Lots of talking and awareness happening in the classroom.

We celebrated Valentine’s Day with a party and by making Valentine’s bags. Thank you to the parents who contributed snacks.

We also celebrated Chinese New Year by making red paper lanterns and the children received red envelopes with chocolate coins. Thank you to Serena’s family for bringing in a Year of the Dog stuffed toy and a Chinese Zodiac calendar.

For our Card Project we tried two different ideas. The first was drawing with pastels and then painting over it with watercolour. The second was painting with yarn using bright colours. When we were finished we asked the children to decide which one was their favorite. The sample cards should be ready the week of April 9th and the order deadline April 18th. Orders should be ready by May 4th.

We have been playing in the gym due to the snow and cold temperatures, but it has been a great time to focus on gross motor skills. Our gym provides a big space with a climber, bikes, balls, balancing apparatus and many other toys to promote all kinds of movement.

We also introduced the Turtle game for earthquake awareness. We will continue this game until the end of the year.

Now on to Spring and Easter.....!

CLASS 401 - Karen and Rosie

What a wonderful month February has been! 401 has been very busy celebrating Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, completing their Card Project art work, working on their Journals and learning more about the world of Numbers!

Together for Valentine’s Day, the children created splatter paint art and made their very own special Valentines bags for each child to give one another a Valentines treat in. It was lovely to see the children dress up for our Valentine's Day Party and as they entered for snack with partners they were given a menu and asked to sit down. Celebrating Valentines was a great way to emphasize the things we talk about daily, like kindness and being a good friend! Kindness is a practice that is focused on in 401, and the notion that when we are kind to one another, it makes others feel good, and it makes us feel good too!
As a class, we also celebrated and discussed Chinese New Year, made red and gold lanterns, and learned about special traditions and rituals that happen during the festivities.

For the Card Project this year the children worked incredibly hard on their three step piece of art. There was an emphasis on fine motor skills, as the children used Pipettes to add colour to their diffusing paper, and then later on to cut the unique pieces that would make up the final product. It was a delight to see the children so excited with something they worked so hard on!

This month we also started discussing more about numbers. With an emphasis on counting, and that “numbers are everywhere”, we sang lots of different "number songs" that can assist the children to count at other times in the future.

Exciting news! We have started something new in 401 called “Friday Shake Up!”, where in the last few minutes of free play, the children will be given a shape and a play station to go to with a group of their friends. This exercise is to promote play with all children and open up a conversation about inclusion. It will also be a nice way to introducing some children who will be going to kindergarten together in the fall.

During snack time we are encouraging independence by letting the children pour their own cups of water. So please remember to send a cup with your child each day.

We also practiced our "Turtle Game" this month, as an Earthquake Drill. The children all practiced quickly becoming a Turtle, crouched down with their hands over their heads as a safety precaution in case of an Earthquake.

We look forward to another great month, filled with learning, laughter, and kindness with 401.

CLASS 402 - Arsi, Permjit and Rosie

Love is in the air and so was a lot of snow!! February was a fun month filled with discussions and activities about friendship, caring, sharing, Chinese New Year, and kindergarten!

We started off by reading a few great books such as  “One Love”, “Plant a Kiss”, “Love, Splat”,  and “The Night Before Valentine’s Day” just to name a few.

We then did a collage of hand prints with a friend and we also made a friendship tree by using our hand prints as well. We talked about how we can be good friends and the boys gave ideas such as: sharing, playing together, hugging, giving high fives, and listening. We made a heart shaped person by gluing together springy arms, legs, and feet! The boys really enjoyed making bracelets using pipe cleaners and beads! Our Valentine's Day party was really fun and the boys looked great in their red and whites. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to bring goodies for our party and thank you parents for taking time to hand out the Valentine’s cards to your child’s classmates!
Right after Valentine’s Day, we jumped into Chinese New Year. We learned that it is the Year of the Dog and we learned some traditions such as cleaning the house, buying new clothes, and cooking a great meal which is part of getting ready! The boys also practiced saying “Gung Hay Fat Choi” which means happy new year in Chinese! For art, we practiced cutting on straight lines to make our lanterns. We also tried writing the Chinese symbol for friendship by using black paint and a fine tip brush. It was neat to see how different the symbols were from our alphabet.
We have now started talking about Kindergarten! We looked at some books and realized there are many similarities and differences between preschool and kindergarten. For example, we learned that in kindergarten the bell rings at the beginning and end of the day whereas in preschool, we sing a morning and a goodbye song! The boys were excited to see that kindergarten still had many fun activities just like preschool.

In our last week of February, we read a crowd favourite, “Chicka-Chicka-Boom-Boom.” This is a perfect book to get us into our alphabet! The boys made their own coconut trees with their names climbing up the tree! How fun!

In the coming weeks, we will continue learning our alphabet and also recognizing and practicing the letters of their names. We encourage parents to practice their child’s name at home as well. At this time of the year, the boys should also be more independent with putting on their own clothes, shoes, jackets (zipping up/down), and opening/closing containers for snack or lunch. These self help skills are what they will need entering kindergarten and practicing now will make it easier.

If you have any questions or concerns, please see your teachers.

CLASS 304/403 - Estelle, Karen, Rosie and Susan

This February, in our classroom we talked about and explored Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year and the concepts of friendship and feelings. The children did everything from making heart people, to dragons, to decorating  rainbow fish for our friendship art.

The children are continuing with their Journals and are getting to be quite creative in their drawings and descriptions. We are also continuing with our Kindergarten Readiness such as recognizing different shapes, cutting and gross motor skills such as hopping, skipping and using a ball. At circle time we are working on sitting still, waiting for our turn to talk by putting up our hands and listening to others or the teacher when it is their turn to talk.

Please remember to send a cup instead of a water bottle so your child can practice using the water jug to pour their own water.

Welcome to our new student Louie!

We also worked hard on our Card Project paintings so be sure to check those cards out when they arrive!

The children are enjoying taking home Echo the Orca and having a turn with Show and Share. We are about halfway through the list of children to have a turn with each activity.

We are learning our songs and dances for the Easter Services!

Hopefully Spring weather is just around the corner so we can play outside more.

MUSIC - Rachel

Throughout February we learned some new music terms: crescendo and decrescendo! We sang songs and played instruments to learn that crescendo means to get slowly louder, and decrescendo means to get slowly quieter.

Some other February activities included  reading a book about the Alphabet and using instruments to help tell our story and on Valentine’s Day we sang songs about hearts and love, and played a special freeze dance game.

And now we are beginning to practice for the Easter Services in April! Stay tuned...!

RESOURCE OFFICE - Marion

I have enjoyed working in the Discover 2s program. Danielle should be back on her feet after Spring Break.

Each child’s individual personality is emerging and they are working on their social skills.   They are moving out of Solitary and Parallel play and into Associative play.  During Solitary play children will often play alone and may be uninterested or unaware of what others around them are doing.  Parallel play occurs when children play side-by-side from one another, but there is a lack of group involvement among them.  This stage is usually seen in toddlers between the ages of 2 ½ and 3 ½ .

The next stage is Associative play and typically begins around 3 or 4.  At this stage, children begin to play together, but not focused towards a common goal.  It is slightly different than Parallel play as children may continue to play separately from one another, but they start to become more involved in what others around them are doing. This is an important stage of play because it develops necessary skills such as cooperation, problem solving and language development.

The last stage is Cooperative play.  It is where play finally becomes organized into groups and teamwork is seen.  Children are now interested in both the people that they are playing with as well as the activity at hand.  Cooperative play is the culmination or bringing together of all the skills learned across previous stages into action, giving the child the necessary skills for social and group interactions.  Wow, your children have been busy this year.

It is a big change to be leaving the preschool years behind, but the teachers are busy preparing the 4s for next year.  The children have started their journals and are practicing printing their names.  They are counting, sorting and sequencing throughout their day.  Small groups of children will work together on a large floor puzzle or will build a sky scraper with blocks. They are also given more responsibilities for dressing themselves and cleaning up after snack and play time.

Play dates are very important, especially for the 4s, as they head off to Kindergarten.  Soon, the teachers will post a list of the children and which schools they will be attending in September.  It is always easier to go into a new environment with someone you know, so plan some play dates.  As the weather improves, play dates in a park can be easy and lots of fun.  Play enhances feelings of acceptance of differences, increases empathy, compassion and sharing.
