May Days! 2015

A note from Jen McEneany - Coordinator

It's incredible to think that another year here at St. Catherine's is almost over! This time of year is always bittersweet for us. On one hand we are excited to celebrate a successful year full of laughter, new experiences and watching your children grow - in ability and confidence as well as height! - but at the same time it is hard to say goodbye, especially to our "big" kids who are off to kindergarten in September. We will miss you all!
Discovery 2's Sea creatures.

I want to say a HUGE thank you to our families for all that you do, from special treats at parties and helping out in the classroom to supporting the preschool through donations, Scholastic orders and fundraisers, we REALLY appreciate your support.

I also need to thank our parent board members - Leslie Black, Amy Green, Caroline Cave and Lauren Sinclair for all their work over the past year. Leslie has been on the board for several years now and always helps us to put together a really valuable parent education evening. Amy was our secretary this year and also spearheaded a very successful wine raffle! Caroline and Lauren, along with the other ladies, hosted a really fun parent social evening at the Taphouse which was a chance for our parents to get together and have some grown up fun! Having a great team of enthusiastic parents on the board really helps us to facilitate these special events and we were certainly extremely lucky to have had these four wonderful women provide us with their time and expertise over the past year. We also have to thank our Chair of the board Gillian Holland, Christine Rowe our rector, Phyllis Mittlestead and Chris Whalen for their continued support of our preschool through their contributions to the board.
402's Chicka Chicka Art work!

Lastly I have to thank the St. Cath's team for all that they do to make this preschool the incredible place that it is. Without these ladies we would not have the high standards of care and the excellent reputation that we have all across the North Shore and beyond. Our teachers are the best that there are. This is more than a job to these ladies it is definitely a vocation and I feel blessed to come to work every day with people who are so motivated, creative, nurturing and just a little bit crazy - you have to be to do the work that we do!!

On behalf of all of us at St. Catherine's Preschool, we wish you all a fantastic summer filled with long lazy days playing outside and lots of adventures with your children. Remember the best gifts you can give to your children cannot be bought. Spending time making memories big and small are all that your children really want or need from you!

A note from Marion Porter - Developmental Resource Educator

“Are we at the end of the school year?”  You may be asking this very question as am I.  It seems like only yesterday... The 2’s were dealing with gradual entry schedules and separation, the 3’s were back meeting new friends, connecting with old ones and getting to know their teachers. The 4’s came back from the summer break with all new skills and an excitement for learning and preparing for the next chapter in their lives. We said Hello to our new Music teacher, Laura who rose to the occasion and put together a wonderful Christmas Service and a special Easter Service. I enjoyed spending time in all the classes and watching the children grow and meet their developmental milestones at their own pace through play.

A few things to think about over the summer:

Emotional Development: a strong sense of trust, security, confidence and self-esteem – is the foundation for learning and growing.
Social Competence: making friends, sharing, turn taking, cooperation – is identified in all research as a critical factor for school success.
Language Development: vocabulary building, rhyming, oral communication, listening – is identified in all research as a prerequisite for academic success.

“READINESS” involves 3 Key Factors:

1) the task at hand makes sense to the child
2) the task  builds on prior accomplishments and learning flow
3) the child demonstrates a real and visible interest in the task and in the steps

Readiness goes hand-in-hand with developmentally appropriate practice.

Please enjoy your summer break and may your families relax and enjoy these early years, as I did - they truly do fly by. My boys are 32, 31 and 29 now and my husband and I have just moved from our family home to a new town-home where Jim and I will cherish this next stage of our lives with our boys off having their own adventures.

A note from Laura Kaario - Music teacher

Now music class has come to an end this year, and so has my time at St. Catherine’s as I will be going to UVic in the fall to finish my Bachelor of Music in education. I’m sorry to be leaving this wonderful preschool and all the teachers and students I have met this year. Perhaps I’ll be able to come back in a few years full of further knowledge!

This year I have focused on introducing the children to the joys of music to foster a lifelong enjoyment of listening to and making music. We’ve heard the many forms music can take – from classical, ethnic, jazz, folk, even environmental sounds as music. When we listen we practiced our listening skills in a few ways: finding and keeping a steady beat; dancing; identifying the tempo, how high the sound is, or what is making the sound; listening quietly and imagining what feelings or story the music is telling us about. We’ve also started basics of making music ourselves with lots of singing, percussion instruments, keeping the beat, and concepts such as high and low, fast and slow (tempo) and loud and quiet. The 4s have learned the solfegge notes so and mi and rhythm syllables ti ti and ta.

This is only the beginning! Music is an endless pursuit whether you are 4 or 64 years old. I encourage you to listen to lots of music this summer with your kids, whether that be an old favourite of yours or something new for you to discover together. Dance to it, see if you can keep the beat or add a new repeating rhythm, make a storyline for what you hear or talk about how it makes you feel. Better yet, add a couple of new or old songs to sing to this summer as well, or make an instrument out things you can find around the house (we discovered anything that makes noise can be used as an instrument!). Play music games like London Bridge is Falling Down or pass a beanbag on the beat to a song.

Wishing you a lot of musical enjoyment and learning in your near and distant future!

A note from the Discovery 2's Program - Sali, Vibha, Estelle, Stephanie, Danielle

We began the month of May with a theme of flowers. We transformed the home corner into a garden centre and the children were busy planting pretend flowers, watering them and arranging bouquets. For art, we created tissue paper collage flowers and hand-print tulips.
Soon it was Mother’s Day and the children had fun making a ‘secret surprise’ and a card for their mommys. We hope the mommys enjoyed these as much as the children enjoyed making them.

Next we moved on to a “Commotion in the Ocean”: For art, we did sea horse stamping, we created sea creatures with water colours and pipettes, glitter octopi, hand print crabs and sponge painted starfish. We also made whales out of tissue paper and fabric. At circle time we read a book called ‘Snappy Little Splashers’ and we sang ‘Slippery fish’, '5 little sharks’ and learned this rhyme:

Seashell, seashell,
Sing a song for me,
Tell me about the ocean,

Tell me about the sea.

We hope you have a wonderful, safe summer and we look forward to seeing you in September!

A note from the Treehouse Room Class 301 - Permjit, Gabi and Sousan

We have enjoyed being with your children and getting to know them over this past year. They have grown up so much and become very independent little people!

In the last couple of months we have been very busy taking part in science experiments (our favourite one was the erupting volcano!) making a special surprise for our very special mamas! Dinosaurs took over our classroom with our child-made dino habitat and different dinosaurs running all over the classroom!  Then it was time to learn about some of the creatures we find in the ocean. It would take many pages to write down everything we created, discussed and the activities we took part in but needless to say we had a fantastic time learning, creating and laughing together.

We wish all the children in our class all the best as they move on to the "big 4's". We have enjoyed our time together and will miss you all lots now that it's time to say goodbye. We wish you all a great summer and we will see you in September.

A note from the Treehouse Room Class 302 - Gabi, Susan, Karen and Peggy

The last month has been very exciting for the children of 302. During the month of May we focused on finishing up our theme of dinosaurs and starting our new theme of the ocean/sea. This transition has gone very well and the children are engaged and excited about our new adventures and activities. In the middle of May we celebrated Mother’s Day. Our children took pride and care in planting the cute little succulent plants for their moms. This activity encouraged the conversation of how plants grow and how to care for plants. We hope all of the moms are enjoying their gifts.

Due to our new theme, our class has been very interested in ocean creatures both at circle and at the art table. Please take a couple of minutes to check out the many ocean themed crafts that are displayed in our classroom and hallway, they are very well done! Since the ocean has been such a hit with our class we are continuing this theme until the end of the year.

We can hardly believe preschool will soon be finishing up for the year. We would like to thank all of the parents who came to visit over the last month. It was very fun having new faces in the classroom each day. The children enjoyed playing, engaging and listening to each parent that spent the morning with us. As we finish up these final weeks of preschool we look forward to many fun activities and of course spending lots of time outside enjoying the sun! We wish you a wonderful summer and we look forward to hearing all about your adventures in September.

A note from the Sunflower Room Class 401 - Susan, Stephanie and Karen

May has been a very exciting month for us all in 401. At the beginning of the month our class enjoyed a field trip to the local Edgemont Village Library. We listened to many fun and exciting stories and songs. A story which made us all roar with laughter was “The Book With No Pictures” by BJ Novak. We highly recommend this book for all families! A song the librarian sang that we absolutely loved was “The Sailor Went to Sea Sea Sea”. This song has since been sung in our classroom many times and goes well with our upcoming themes of ocean and Hawaii.

The middle of May was focused on preparing our Mother’s Day gifts. The children took care when planting their sunflower within the small pot of dirt. This activity allowed the children to see how a plant grows and the importance of watering and caring for something as small as a sunflower seed. We hope all of our moms are enjoying their gifts! Also this month the children made beautiful tie dyed shirts for our Hawaiian Luau. The month of May ended with an eventful visit from a real scientist! She brought in many fun activities on the topic of bubbles for us to explore. We blew small, medium and large bubbles and even got to take home a handmade bubble blower!

Unbelievably, preschool will be coming to an end next week. We are sad to be saying goodbye but will make the most of our last days together! We wish you and your family a fantastic summer and we will miss all of our class as they head off to Kindergarten in September.

A note from the Sunflower/Rainbow Room Class 402 - Arsi, Danielle and Sousan

Wow, how time flies... I cannot believe that we are now going into June....The children have grown so much since September! We have certainly made the last few months at Preschool busy ones with lots of learning, exploring, playing and experimenting with new things.

After the Easter Services which were great, we looked into 'The Human Body'. We learned what our bodies are made off, what we need to do in order to keep them healthy and happy.  We used clay to 'design' our own bodies and we made a collage of the skeletal system.  We played with 'red intestines' in the water table, looked at x ray's, touched ' a skeleton' and dug for bones in the sand box.

We then moved on to our favourite subject 'Mother's Day'. The children were very busy making their own candle votive holders with lots of glue and tissue paper..Something to treasure for years to come!

The children have now finally finished looking at each letter of the alphabet... As you can imagine this took us 26 days! We have now became very proficient at knowing what letter our names begin with and also the first letter of our friends names...This gave us many opportunities to practice letters, especially how to spell our names.

Next we looked at another favourite topic 'Bugs'. This involved talking about how important bugs are to our world, were you can find them, how they move, what they eat and what they do for us. We explored worms, snails and bugs.  We even had time for a special Bug Walk to the duck pond.

Last week we had a “Fossil Workshop”. After spending two weeks exploring dinosaurs, it was a great way to sum up our learning.  We made our own fossils out of clay. We used glasses, hammers and brushes to dig up our own 'dinosaur bones'. We traced, cut and decorated T-Rex, Stegosaurus' and Brachiosaurus'. The teachers had a lot of fun learning how to pronounce the dinosaur names, while the children enjoyed being the teachers...Lots of learning for everyone.

In June, we are looking into 'Community Helpers'. The people who help us everyday. We enjoyed a visit from The District of North Vancouver Firefighters and we hope you all enjoyed the slideshow we sent via email.

Over the last few weeks we have been busy cutting, drawing, writing, gluing, exploring, learning new things, playing and having fun... Challenging ourselves so we can grow and develop. We have done an excellent job and now we are ready for Kindergarten!

Finally, we would like to thank you all for a great year.  It has been so much fun...We are going to miss everyone.  Please come back for a visit when you have the time! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to either Danielle,  Arsi or Sousan.

A note from the Treehouse Room Class 304 - Vibha, Stephanie, Gabi and Karen

We can't believe it's that time of the year again. This year has flown by so quickly. For the last month and a half we explored dinosaurs. We talked about volcanoes, the different types of dinosaurs, and what paleontologists do. We decorated stegosauruses, T-Rex, and Pteranodons. We worked together to make a group volcano and to create a Jurassic park area in our home corner! We did a science experiment to make a lava lamp and were amazed at the reaction of the alka seltzer. One day we became paleontologists and dug for dinosaur fossils. It was hard work getting to the dinosaurs but in the end it was so exciting to see what we found. The children really enjoyed this theme as a lot of them already knew many of the dinosaur names and what they looked like.

During our dinosaur exploration we were able to fit a week in to create something special for an important lady in our lives. The children spent a lot of time decorating the wine bottle vases and were so excited to give them to their moms. Hope all you moms had a wonderful Mother's Day!

The last few weeks we explored different art mediums such as shaving cream, powder paint, and finger-paints. It was incredible to see what the children created using their imagination with these materials. We also made cake pops and apple juice. They were delicious!

The children have come together so nicely as a group and they have been a pleasure to work with. We would like to wish everyone an amazing summer and hope to see you all next year for more fun and learning!

A note from the Treehouse Room Class 403 - Permjit, Stephanie, Karen and Gabi

This is our final blog entry for our class before many of you move on to Kindergarten. We know how excited you all are to begin "big school" and we wish you all the best as you move on to this next chapter in your lives. We will miss you all and we want you to know how much we have enjoyed spending time getting to know you all and getting you prepared for this next transition.

For the last little while we have been exploring dinosaurs. First we made an awesome dino habitat and then we talked about how there were a lot of volcanic eruptions during the time of the dinosaurs so we made our own volcano and added it to our habitat. The best part was making our volcano explode with "real" lava! Next we read about and learned what dinosaurs eat as well as which ones flew, ran fast or lumbered along slowly! To tie in with this theme, we had a real scientist from High Touch High Tech come to give us a "Fossil" workshop in which we learned about what amber is made from, dug for bones and looked at real fossils. The scientist was really clever and she kept us very interested throughout the workshop!

Next we moved on to our Hawaiian theme which some of our class had first hand knowledge of, having just been on holiday over there! We learned about the different islands and which animals and plants you might find over there. We also learned that there are volcanoes which are still active and some which are dormant (just like the time of the dinosaurs!). On Friday we had a Luau and some of us wore the tie-dye T-shirts we made together!

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to teach the most important people in your life, we hope you all have a fantastic summer filled with fun and adventures. We look forward to seeing some of you again in September and for those of you who are headed off to Kindergarten we know you are going to do so well!

From all of us here at St. Catherine's Preschool, we wish you a wonderful summer with your family!

A note from Laura Kaario - Music Teacher

The concepts we have been working on this month include the notes so and mi for the 4's. This interval (the amount of space between the notes) is one that most cultures of the world naturally learn first and are most tuned into. It’s the interval of the average doorbell, Chickadees in the spring (Chicka-dee-dee-dee is so so mi mi mi), and even the notes you use when you call your kids in the park with a sing song voice (Laaau-raaaaa, let’s goooo!). It’s also the interval in Rain, Rain Go Away (so mi, so so mi) and similar songs. With both 3's and 4's we have been working on finding the beat of a song and clapping it, stepping to it or patting it on our knees, noses, foreheads – wherever! It’s the beat no matter where you put it, as long as you don’t start going faster or slower when the song stays the same speed.

This spring we have been listening to music of the world and a new flag appears on our paper earth in the classroom each week. Watch for the little flag on the music classroom door as well! In the past couple of months we have heard music from Zimbabwe, Peru, England, China, and Iran, celebrating the new years of the latter two countries. We have also learned songs for Valentine’s Day and a day of rain music (some of which you will have heard at our services – God made the rain too after all!).

We took a break from new flags and world music so that we could learn all our music for the Easter services. Our theme was God’s creation and love. We all worked very hard to learn the words and actions and the children all did a fantastic job performing all of our songs, poems, movement and instrument playing for you! I'm very proud of each and every child for trying their best at the Services - it's not easy to see your parents so close and keep your mind focused on performing but they all did so well!

A note from the Rainbow Room Discovery 2's - Sali, Vibha, Stephanie, Estelle, Danielle

By the time this newsletter reaches you, it will officially be Spring! For the months of March and April we had fun pasting, painting and collaging cutout bunnies, chicks and eggs. The children also enjoyed experimenting with finger paints. They had great fun using the egg tongs at the science table to pick up eggs and other small objects. At Circle the children love to sing finger rhymes and action songs.
Hop Little Rabbit

Hop little rabbit, hop, hop, hop
Hop little rabbit don't you stop
Hop little rabbit 1,2,3
Hop little rabbit, hop to me.

Over the past few weeks we have noticed that our little twos are growing up to be great little threes. We are seeing them work so well together. Their play is starting to incorporate more and more children. As teachers, we are always looking for ways to bring new and exciting experiences to the classroom, to enhance this process. The most exciting area is language development and the blossoming of speech. Another interesting development is the beginning of pretend play - playing with dolls, dishes and dress-up clothes.

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 301 - Permjit, Gabi and Sousan

We hope you all had a relaxing, wonderful time spent with family and friends over Spring Break. We did notice how much our lovely students matured in just a two week break! Besides growing more into their shirts, tops and pants, they are more relaxed at times of transitions, and have an easier time saying good-bye to mom and dad as they come in to start a day at preschool.

They all seem to recognize when a friend needs help or just a little more encouragement to join an activity, and the proud smile on their faces when they tackle a new task or are successful at opening a friend’s snack is priceless!

March was super busy, with two multicultural celebrations and starting off a third one, we were always on our toes! We had some festive fun turning everything green for St. Patrick’s Day, even the water in the water table, and of course shimmery golden and green sparkles (that are still clogging up my washer and dryer!) were used by the handfuls to decorate shamrocks. Then we moved on to celebrate Persian New Year by planting beans to celebrate new life/spring. Eggs, chickens and bunnies were the next art/table toy items to be found everywhere, and for science we proved that eggs are way stronger then they look as we walked on them without wearing shoes or socks.

Before the break we practiced the songs and poems for our Easter Service and we were so proud of all our preschoolers on the day! It was wonderful to see them all up there, singing, smiling and waving to you and having so much fun afterwards at the tea.

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 302 - Gabi, Susan, Karen, Peggy

We can’t believe that the school year is almost over! We hope that you all enjoyed Spring Break, I think the teachers did come back with more energy to match the children’s (if that’s even possible!!). It is obvious that our lovely children grow by the day, but it is always a wonder to see them after a short while, when they first come back to our care just how much they really change in appearances and maturity on all levels. They confidently wear their shorter pants- good thing capris are in style- and smiles as they walk in the classroom, heading straight to a little friend, or to us telling stories about family outings, play-dates, exciting updates on anything that happened over the break.

They are all settled in the daily routine, our shy friends have found connections with our more outgoing children, they constantly move around in the room or on the playground to form small or large groups to play in, nicely involving new friends. They are all unbelievably caring and compassionate about helping friends who need extra support or just more encouragement  to join these group activities.

March was a green month, and not only because the weather turned nicer, but considering the amount of green paint we used for art, or green colored objects we used to decorate the Treehouse room. We celebrated St. Patrick's Day with shamrocks, leprechauns and lovely rainbows, while discussing changes in the weather and the environment. We also spent time practicing the poems and songs for the Easter Service and your children did so well up on stage; we're sure you had just as much fun watching them up there! It was lovely to spend some time having tea all together afterwards.

Please remember dress your children in weather appropriate clothing as we are looking forward to spending more time outside.

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 304 - Stephanie, Vibha, Gabi, Karen

March seemed to fly by so fast! We hope everyone had a wonderful spring break. For one week we talked about Bob Marley's song 'One Love'. The children really enjoyed listening to the song and they were interested in learning more about Bob Marley. We created a board to represent this song which included people, butterflies, and flowers.

Before we started talking about Spring and Easter, we decorated shamrocks with green paint and glitter for St. Patrick's Day. Then went on to decorating Easter eggs with water colours, painting Easter baskets, and decorating and dying plastic eggs. At circle we played games and read stories about Easter and the Easter Bunny. We also made a spring picture using popcorn to represent blossoms. The children really enjoyed this particular activity because it was a nice treat for them to have a taste of the popcorn before we used it for art! To end things off we got a lovely surprise from the Easter Bunny! The children were so excited that he came to visit us to hide chocolate eggs in our classroom. Unfortunately we didn't have a chance to see him but he left behind a special note for us.

We had fun up in the Church performing our songs and poems for everyone and of course having a yummy Easter tea in the gym all together afterwards!

As the weather is getting nicer we would like to remind parents to dress your children in proper running shoes as we will be going outside more often. For our next theme we will be exploring everything about dinosaurs!

A note from the Sunflower Room - Class 401- Susan, Stephanie, Karen

We had a very busy month with lots of fun and exciting activities planned. For two weeks we did free art using different art mediums. We explored with paint on canvases, pastels, charcoal, clay, and puffy paintings. It was interesting to see all the different ways these materials can be used and we were able to be as creative as we wanted with them.

A science experiment that the children were amazed by was using milk, dish soap, and food colouring. It was so neat to see all of their reactions when they touched the colours with the dish soap.

Our theme for the month was Easter so we decorated Easter baskets, coloured and dyed Easter eggs, and made Spring trees with Q-tips. It was such a nice surprise to get a visit from the Easter Bunny! He had some tricky spots that he hid the chocolate eggs in but we were able to find them all. We finished up with our Easter Services which were a lot of fun and then it was great to all have a delicious tea all together in the gym.

We also started our journals this month. Each week we will spend one day drawing a picture in our journals and then the teachers will write down a story of what the children tell them about the picture. This will give the children a chance to use their imagination and practice their story telling skills. They will also practice writing their name each time. Sometimes it will be a free journal entry and sometimes there will be a specific topic. At circle we read a story called 'The Golden Egg Book' but we only read half of it. Then the children were asked to draw what they thought was inside of the egg in their journals. At the end circle we finished the story and they found out what was actually inside it.

Next month we will be focusing on the alphabet and kindergarten readiness skills with the children. We will also be starting show and tell so please check the bulletin board for your child's day to bring something.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to any of the teachers.

A note from the Sunflower/Rainbow Room - Class 402 - Danielle, Arsi and Sousan

With the chirping of birds and budding of flowers, we are looking forward to Spring! We have started talking about what we observe as the season changes such as hearing birds chirp, seeing the flowers slowly bloom, and even what changes in our clothes as the weather becomes warmer.

During one of our art sessions, we made the sequence of a flower growing from a seed to sprouting roots and then growing into a flower. We learned about the different a parts such as the stem, the bud, and the petals. We also had a chance to make flower collages too.

We have started our Alphabet letters with our favorite story "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom." After reading the book, the children then used their cutting skills by making their own tree trunk and putting together a coconut tree. They also practiced tracing the letters A,B, and C, tracing and cutting out the letter B, and making a flower alphabet puzzle with various other letters that we have talked about.

As we discover the alphabet, we have dived enthusiastically into our journals. This gives the children a chance to express themselves with their own art work and tell us what they have drawn. The children have also started to practice printing their names in their journals with guidance. It will be very fun to see their journals coming together at the end if the year!

Green, green, everywhere green! We had fun decorating shamrocks and even making green cupcakes for St.Patrick's Day! Some of the children even tried green hair and green hats from the house corner! Before we knew it, Easter was around the corner!

We started off by the children making their own hatched egg with a chick inside. They traced the hatched egg shape, glued soft cotton circles for the shape of the chick, and even used water color to make their chicks yellow! Looked great! Next up was to make the Easter baskets (just in case the Easter Bunny visited!) and to decorate our own Easter eggs with lots of sparkle!!! And of course we had to make some Easter bunnies too.

The Easter Service went very well and we were proud to see our preschoolers up there singing and reciting their verses. It's always bittersweet at this service to think that this is the last time our class will be doing this but great to see how much they have matured and how much confidence they have up there. Having tea with our families was really fun too!

It's been busy but we remember to keep "bucket filling" and practice being a "bucket filler ." Our jar is definitely filling up!! We've even gotten great at our favorite group activity which is freeze dance! We cheer each other on and dance, dance, dance!

Now we are exploring the world of Emily Carr and letting her inspire our inner artists! We hope you enjoyed the slideshow we sent you as we took an adventure out in the garden.

If you have any questions, please come to us!!!

A note from the Treehouse Room - Class 403 - Permjit, Stephanie, Gabi, Karen

We hope everyone had a lovely spring break. It was such a nice way to end things before the break with the skate party. It was great to see everyone who could make it. There were some really good skaters out there. It was such a nice get together with all of the four year old classes.
This month was all about Easter, but we were able to spend one day talking about St.Patrick's Day and decorated green shamrocks with glitter. Next we painted Easter baskets using Q-tips, coloured and dyed plastic Easter eggs, and decorated bunny masks. One theory we tested out was what will happen if we walked on eggs? We each got to walk on a carton of eggs and we found out they didn't break! It was an exciting surprise to get a visit from the Easter Bunny! We had so much fun trying to find the chocolate eggs that he hid in our classroom. We finished up with our celebrations with our Easter Service up in the Church, which was a lot of work but worth it! We love to see your children singing up there and we're sure you enjoy seeing them just as much as we do! Afterwards it's fun to all spend some time together having the Easter tea in the gym.

We will be starting show and tell and this will give the children an opportunity to practice speaking in front of a group. We will also be working on other kindergarten readiness skills until the end of the year. Our next theme will be all about dinosaurs!

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to any of the teachers.

As February is the month where we celebrate 'love' we decided to combine Valentine's Day with learning about 'being a friend'. This involved decorating heart's, using Valentine colours in a group art and making feet shaped heart's. We also did lots of art involving finger painting, gluing, butterfly prints and stamping with apples. At circle time we reinforced our manners: Please, Thank you, Excuse Me and Using our gentle hands. We learnt many songs about using our manners, taking turns and sharing. We worked together to sing Ring a Ring a Rosie and The More we Get Together.
Sweet Little Feet!

On Valentine's Day we had a lovely PJ Party with yummy food supplied by our parents (Thank you for that), face painting and dancing.

As February was also Chinese New Year, the Year of the Sheep, we made Dragon Puppets and painted with Red, Gold and Black. We read "My Chinese New Year", danced with scarves to Chinese New Year Music and listened to the felt rhyme '5 Chinese Dragons'.

As the children are now starting to grow and develop, we have noticed some of them moving away from Parallel play to more Social play...choosing a friend to play with  e.g. At the trains, home corner, sand box and even outside.

We will now move on to talk about Easter and Spring, as well as continuing to reinforce how to use our manners and share with our friends. As the warmer weather is starting, this is a great opportunity to start toilet training for those who have not yet started. Please let us know if this is the case, as consistency is the key.

I would also like to remind you to bring an extra change of clothes to preschool.... We have lots of fun and often need to change...

If you have any questions please feel free to speak to any of us!

We like to get messy!
We had a really fun February! We spent the month celebrating Chinese New Year with lots of artwork in red, gold and black and stories about this special time in the Chinese calendar. Next we talked about friendship and feelings for Valentine's day. We made a "Friendship Fruit Salad" which was absolutely delicious and then we had a pj party with all our friends (thanks to the parents who provided yummy treats).

The weather has warmed up this past week so we have really enjoyed getting outside and playing in the sand box, climbing and running outside!

We hope that you all have a lovely Spring Break and we look forward to hearing about all the fun you had once we get back to preschool! If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact us!

Hello Everyone!

This month has been filled with many exciting events and holidays. We celebrated Valentine’s Day in style! We all sported our pajamas and enjoyed some yummy treats at our Valentine’s class party. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Valentine’s Day party. We also celebrated Chinese New Year’s. This week was filled with Chinese themed art and activities. Feel free to check out our Chinese Lanterns which are displayed in our classroom!

The weather over the last few weeks has been incredible and has allowed our class to spend lots of time outside. The sand box has been open for digging, exploring and building. The children are playing well together in this outside setting by playing tag, “my little ponies” and "baking" in the play house!

Within the classroom, we have discussed the importance of feelings, emotions and friends. Our home corner is currently a place to gather with your friends and dolls! The children have been very receptive to the idea of feelings and friends. There has been an emphasis in the classroom on caring, sharing and playing well together and the children are rising to the challenge!
This month has gone by so fast due to our many exciting activities and we are looking forward to exploring the new spring season after our break when we will dive into the ideas of gardening, planting, flowers and of course Easter! Have a wonderful Spring Break and we will see you back on Tuesday March 17th.

Rice Cake
February flew by with two big celebrations. First we got prepared for Valentine's Day with lots of art which centered around love and friendship. We also read stories which discussed being kind and about friendship as well singing lots of fun songs about love! We finished up with a very formal dinner party at "Chez St. Catherine's" complete with fancy candle holders on the table and menus! It was so cute to see all our class dressed up all fancy. Thanks to the parents who provided yummy treats!

Next we spent a week talking about Chinese New Years. We learnt a lot about the different traditions that happen for this day. We also baked a dessert that called a rice cake. It was interesting trying something we have never tried before.

This week we just said goodbye to Hannah our classroom volunteer who has been with us for quite some time now, we know that she will be missed as all the children really enjoyed playing with her. We wish her all the best!

We hope you have a fantastic spring break and we will see you back at preschool on Monday March 16th!

What a 'lovely' month we have just had...talking about Valentine'sDay and learning about How to be Bucket Fillers, not Bucket Dippers...We 'brainstormed' actions/words that helped fill our buckets e.g. Sharing, listening, hugging, helping, playing with our friends and using our manners.  We also discussed ways that 'dip' into our bucket, e.g. hurting our friends, being mean, not listening, breaking toys, leaving a mess, shouting and not sharing. We are now working as a team to help fill the classroom bucket. This involves listening, sharing, playing with our friends, helping clean up and using our manners... It is moving along slowly but it is great to see how everyone is using their words to try and 'bucket fill'.

On Valentine's Day we had a lovely Red/Pink & White party with yummy food supplied by parents and some lovely Valentine's Day notes for friends.

The Tunnel of Love!
We also celebrated Chinese New Year, the year of the Sheep. We were very busy collaging dancing dragons, marble painting with black, red and gold colours, trying to write Chinese characters, dancing to Chinese Music and finally making our own sheep masks for our Dancing Parade! We watched a video about Chinese New Year, were we learnt some Chinese words and new types of food. We listened to the story “Goldy Luck and the 3 Panda's”.

As our 4's turn to 5's we are starting to get ready for Kindergarten, so we have started to introduce the ABC's....We are exploring what words start with each letter, the shape of them, how to write them and encouraging them to think of their own words for the “Letter of the Day".

In the next few weeks we are discussing spring and Easter. We will continue to work on the alphabet and start our journey into our journals...

Just a little reminder that we are here for 4 hours, so it is better to pack more food than not.  They can always take it home. Please continue to send extra clothing as there are some very enthusiastic painters and children who enjoy water play. With the cold weather here, please remember to send warm coats and hats. Our playground is shaded and tends to be cooler earlier in the day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to either Danielle,  Arsi or Sousan.

What a fun and exciting month we just had with Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day happeni
Bob Marley inspired artwork!
ng so close to one another. First, we talked about Chinese New Year and we looked at a Chinese calender to see the different animals that represent each year. We talked about a big parade that happens with lion dancers and how families hand out lucky red envelopes. For art we decorated red paper lanterns with gold paint.

After all the excitement of Chinese New Year was over, we jumped right into Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day gave us a great opportunity to talk about friendship and feelings. We did a variety of different crafts using hearts. At circle time we read books and sang songs about friendship and feelings. We asked the children what they loved. Here are some of the responses... Hugs, Horses, Spiderman, Wiggles, Cars, Princess and Wizard of Oz. To finish up this theme, we had a Valentine's Day party. We would like to thank the parents who brought all the delicious treats to share!

Love filled the air during the month of February! There were lots of hearts all around us. For the first two weeks we talked about friendship and did many activities around Valentine's Day. At circle we got into partners and did activities with them. It was a great chance for everyone to play with someone who they don't usually play with. For art we decorated Valentine bags, cut out hearts and decorated them, and made heart people. Each of us also brought in a piece of fruit and we all worked together to cut them up and made a friendship fruit salad. To end things off we had a very lovely formal Valentine's party. We transformed the classroom into a fancy restaurant and the children were seated by the hostess and given menus to order from. It was such a neat experience for everyone! Thank you to all of the parents who brought the delicious treats for the party.
Friendship!
Next we spent a week talking about Chinese New Years. We learnt a lot about the different traditions that happen for this day. We made paper bag dragon puppets and decorated red paper lanterns to celebrate this special day. We also baked a dessert that called a rice cake. It was interesting trying something we have never tried before.

The children became scientists for two weeks. It was so much fun exploring a variety of different experiments. There were a lot of theories being made and it was neat to find out the conclusion to each theory. One of the highlights of our experiments was seeing what happened when we put mentos into a bottle of coke. It was such an amazing explosion! We did an experiment about walking water, mixed colours with glue and water-colours, borax snowflakes, cornstarch and water, milk and bursting colours with dish soap, and made puffy paintings.

Recipe for puffy paintings
1 tbsp. Self rising flour
1 tbsp. salt
Water
Food colouring

Mix together flour and salt. Add water until consistency of yogurt. Add few drops of food colouring.

Use it to paint a picture on a thick piece of paper. When finished, put in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Next month we will be talking about Spring and Easter! If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to any of the teachers.
