Happy Sunny Days! April 2013

301 Original Canvas

We have had such a fun month here at preschool, first we had a parent education seminar with Christopher Burt M.A. in April which was very well attended. Chris spoke about how we as parents and caregivers have the ability to influence our children's behaviour rather than trying to control it. He talked about setting up environments which are conducive to wanted behaviours such as looking at the areas in which we are experiencing the most difficulties, for example bedtime, and making changes in the way we approach this daily routine. Perhaps turning the television/computer/cell phone off for the hour before bedtime and having a snack/bath/story etc. every evening might begin the routine and set a calm tone. Next being very engaged with your children about the going to bed process and sticking to this routine as much as possible, could help to influence the perception of a child who sees bedtime as a negative end to a fun day.

Listening to Chris made me realise that an issue I was having with getting my children up and ready for school in the morning was actually a bedtime issue also. Our evenings were not organised and routine enough and therefore the mornings were beginning to suffer in the same way. I was allowing my girls to sleep in too long (thinking that they needed to sleep as long as possible) and then we were all rushing and feeling stressed every morning.

Now I am making sure that we have our outfits picked out the night before, all homework and notices ready to go, and packed lunches made the evening before (yes I know I should have been doing this stuff all along!) as well as making sure that Ayla in particular, has a snack half an hour before bed all translates into a smoother bedtime routine and then an easier morning. Another important part to this new and improved morning routine is that I am making myself get up half an hour earlier so that I am dressed and ready to be solely available to help Ayla and Kaitlyn begin their day. I am waking them up earlier too, so that if they are not having a great morning we don't have to worry so much about being late while simultaneously feeling grumpy and stressed!

Changing the environment by making things more organised and changing my own routine as a parent is proving to be much more effective than my previous method of basically letting the girls know that they needed to get up and be responsible for helping to get themselves to school on time. Even though I thought I was using positive language and letting them know what was expected of them, I didn't have the environment set up which would help them to succeed and my words meant nothing to them while we were rushed and stressed!

I think many parents find themselves using language to either explain over and over what they would like to see in regards to their children's behaviours or going straight to a consequence which is often only something which works in the short term, and attends only to the unwanted behaviour rather than encouraging the behaviours we want to see.

Chris definitely focused a lot of his seminar on the ideas of acknowledging wanted behaviours frequently instead of putting so much effort into changing unwanted behaviours as well as changing the environments that our children are exposed to, rather than expecting great changes in their behaviours to come from within.

We have had a lot of positive feedback from parents regarding this seminar and we hope that Chris will join us again in the future and give us more insights into the complexities of parenting!

I would also like to say a big thank you to Leslie Black for introducing us to Chris and for her hard work in putting together this parent seminar.

The year is quickly coming to an end and we are starting to enjoy some warmer, sunny days. It has been a pleasure watching your children grow with their peers. For the 4’s this means leaving familiar friends, teachers and routines.

Please check the boards for the lists of which Kindergarten everyone is going to and see if you can arrange some play dates in the next month and during the summer. It can be helpful to visit your elementary school playground before school starts to meet some friends.

You can help your child with the transition by:

  • Talking with your child about the impending changes.
  • Helping your child to acquire many self-help skills.
  • Encouraging your child to ask for help when needed.
  • Allowing your child to practise working independently.
  • Helping your child to learn his/her full name, address and telephone number.
  • Teaching your child about rules and how important they are.

From Creative Music  Cheryl

After all the work of the Easter Services it has been nice to settle back in to our regular routine in the music room. We have been reading Shel Silverstein's poem "The Yippie Yuck" which is so full of imagery and a great poem for young children. We spent time acting out the poem and thought about what the Yippie Yuck might have looked like and sounded like.

We have our music open house next week on Wednesday May 22 and Thursday May 23.

202 Original Canvas

Parent/caregivers are welcome but we do ask that you find care for younger siblings so that you can focus and engage with you preschooler and make this a special time just for you and them.

In preparation for the music open house we are learning a song which is played in three parts. It is called "Come follow, follow, follow, follow, follow, follow me"! and we are learning to play the xylophone for one part, the drums for another and bells for the final part of the song.

From the Discovery 2's  Danielle, Estelle, Vibha, Gabi, Cheryl, and Karen

What a lovely April the Discovery Two's have had this year. We focused on the theme of Spring and all the beautiful things we discover when the weather starts to get warmer and it rains a little less.
We read "The Lonely Firefly", "The Hungry Caterpillar", "The Grouchy Ladybug" and many more books about spring. We listened to felt rhymes: "5 Little Bunnies", "5 Frogs", "5 Ladybugs" and more! We felt the texture of cherry blossoms, a bird's nest, pieces of wood, bee hives, and pine cones as well as spending time outside, searching for bugs!

204 Original Canvas

We made our own Cherry Blossom trees, experimented with water colour and made Butterflies and Dragonflies. We also made tulip hand prints and spotted Ladybugs. Some of us even made our own 3D bugs with coffee grinds! Next we glued and painted flowers and used our hands to make bees wings. We explored Animal Yoga poses and 'grew' from a small seed into a flower. We danced around the room with scarves and we have started to use bubbles to try to understand our own "personal bubble".

We have also been talking a bit about using our "Gentle Hands" and using our words with our friends.  Two books we read where "Hands are not for Hitting" and  "Words are Not for Hurting".

Buzzy bees and Cherry trees!
As the children are becoming more comfortable in the classroom and used to the routines and expectations we find that they are beginning to try to test the boundaries that we have set with regards to appropriate behaviours in the classroom. We find it is important to be consistent with our directions and follow through on them. It is also important to provide the children with a couple of choices to encourage their independence but yet still be socially appropriate for all involved.

Just a quiet note to let you know that even though the weather is getting warmer, our playground stays cool and shaded for most of the day, so please pack a warm sweater/jacket, thank you!

We hope you enjoyed your Mother's Day surprise!

From the Rainbow Room 301  Sali, Joanna and Karen

We hope you all enjoyed watching your children perform at the Easter services and that you enjoyed meeting other parents at the tea. The children practised very hard to learn their songs and play their instruments.
In early April, we talked about planting and spring. The children planted their own bean seeds and were very excited to see them beginning to sprout. We read a book called "Grow Flower Grow" in which a little girl is trying to figure out the best food to help her flower grow. We made daffodils out of cup cake cases and displayed them on our back wall. We had a garden centre in the house corner and had so much fun wearing gardening gloves and arranging and watering  bouquets (and of course giving them to the teachers!)
We talked about weather and displayed all our weather art work on the bulletin board. We made raindrops out of diffusing paper which hung from a cloud covered in black hand prints. We painted rainbows and suns and made ‘stained glass’ kites with tissue paper. For circle, we learned how to spell some weather words to the tune of B-I-N-G-O.
Toward the end of April, we had our Jeans week in which the teachers and children wore jeans in support of BC Children’s Hospital. We decorated our own mini pairs of jeans and read the book "Franklin goes to the hospital" to explain what going to the hospital is all about. The children were so excited to toss their donations into the umbrella. Thank you to all the parents for your generous donations, it goes towards a very worthy cause.
We have just started a unit on ‘Classic Children’s Stories’. This week, we read and acted out  "The Three little pigs" we also read a story about  "Three little Wolves and a big bad Pig!" We learned a tickle rhyme “This Little Piggy” to play with baby siblings, cousins or friends.
We are so proud of the progress the children have made since September. They have become very independent with snack time and dressing themselves. Thank you to the parents for helping your children with these skills at home. The children are also doing really well at walking in a line and keeping quiet voices while walking outside the classroom. They are really ready to go to the ‘Fours’ classes in September.
From the Tree House Room 302  Stephanie, Rachel and Joanna
Where did all the time go? We are already into a new month. The children did a wonderful job singing at the Easter service. Thank you to Cheryl for all the hard work she put into everything. All of the rehearsals really paid off. It was a great service. It was lovely to have a chance to see everyone at the tea enjoying themselves.

302 Original Canvas
This month our topic was flowers and growing. During circle we talked about the life cycle of plants and what they need in order to grow. We then planted our own bean plants. We are keeping a close eye on them to see when they will start to sprout. We made gardens using Popsicle sticks and cut out flowers, decorated a variety of different flowers, and made sunflowers.
For jeans week we decorated jeans that we hung up in our classroom. During circle we talked about why we had an umbrella hanging in our classroom and why we were donating all of that money to children's hospital. Thank you to everyone for the generous donations.
As the weather is starting to get nicer we will be going outside to play more often. We would like to remind parents to send your children to school with proper running shoes.
For the next month our topic will be on bugs.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to the teachers.

From the Treehouse Room 303/403  Sali, Vibha and Stephanie

We hope you enjoyed the Easter service and tea. The children were so proud to perform their songs and worked very hard practising.
In April, our class had a fun and interesting time learning about space. In circle, We learned about a different  planet each day, it was amazing how much the children remembered.  We sang “Five little men in a flying saucer”, “Zoom, zoom, zoom” and “Twinkle twinkle little star”. We read “Little Pip and the rainbow wish” and the Fours thought up their own ending which we helped them to write in their journals.
For art, we made a paper mache solar system and hung it above the circle carpet for all the classes to enjoy. We coloured diffusing paper with blue and green to represent Earth, painted bright yellow and orange suns and finger painted with red like Mars “Our red planet”. We also made play dough moons and salt dough rocket ‘cookies’ and shiny astronauts and constellations.
Next we had fun dressing up like astronauts with realistic jet packs and helmets and tasted real astronaut ice cream. We made ‘space’ cake pops and ‘moon juice’. Yummy!
Toward  the end of April, we had our ‘jeans week’. The teachers and children wore jeans in support of BC Children’s hospital. The children decorated tiny pairs of jeans. We had an umbrella in each classroom to collect donations. The children were enthusiastic about bringing their coins to toss in!
We have recently moved on to planting. The home corner was converted in to a garden centre. This week, we are planting bean seeds in a glass jar so we can watch the seeds germinate. We will also be planting our own bean in a pot.
On Fridays, we have started our yoga class with Vibha. The children are showing a great interest and are carefully learning the ‘poses’.
It  has been great to have such lovely sunny weather over the past week, the sandbox is now open and the children are busy working together building and digging.
From the Treehouse Room 401  Stephanie, Rachel and Krystal

Nests and baby birds!
The last month seemed to fly by so quickly. I guess that's what happens when we are so busy at preschool! The Easter service was a huge success. The children sang beautifully up on stage. Thank you to Cheryl for all the hard work she put into making everything come together so smoothly. It was such a pleasure to have a chance to chat with the parents at our tea afterwards.

Our first experiment!

For the month of April we decided to focus on science experiments with the children. The children loved being scientists and making guesses about what they thought would happen. You could see the excitement on their faces when they did the experiments and saw the results. This was such a neat topic because it brought up many questions and much curiosity in the children. It was great to explore these questions and make observations about what was happening.
We talked lots about how there is no right or wrong in science. Science has endless possibilities and some experiments may not turn out the same if you do it a second time. The experiments that we conducted were:
1. Flowers in coloured water
2. Milk, salt and food colouring
3. Bubbles
4. Epsom salt and water
5. Cornstarch and water
Once we were done being scientists we decorated jeans for jeans week. During circle we talked about why we have jeans week and why we were collecting money. We talked about how we are helping children who are sick and have to go to the hospital. We would like to thank everyone for their donations in our umbrellas.
As the children are going to be entering kindergarten soon, we are putting out more challenging materials and encouraging them to be more independent. There is a sheet on our bulletin board to write which school your child is going to be attending next year. This can give you an opportunity to make play dates with the children who are going to the same school.
As the weather is starting to get nicer we will be going outside to play more often. We would like to remind parents to send your children to school with proper running shoes.
For the next month we will be focusing on caterpillars and butterflies.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to any of the teachers.

Our pop bottle jet-packs!

Writing the May Newsletter in the beautiful sunshine really makes us appreciate the summer being so close! We can picture hanging out at the beach and making endless sandcastles and running in out of the waves. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. Summer means that preschool is almost at an end and sometimes it feels as if we have only just gotten to know all the amazing and awesome personalities before it's time for them to move on. They are so grown up and independent and at the same time you just what to protect them because they are so sweet!

We have (as you must have gathered!) been visiting space. We turned our home corner into a space station with the help of the children. Computers, keyboards and writing pads were a big hit. They organized their friends to put on helmets and oxygen backpacks before venturing out into the great unknown! We discussed why we had to have them on when we are in space because there's no gravity, which keeps us grounded on Earth.

Listening to the conservations in which the children tried to rememeber which planets were nearest to the sun was so priceless! We had a magnet board game in the home corner and one of the children suggested getting a book from the shelf so they could find out the correct postions for each planet. Then they  proceeded to work together to do that and were so happy with the end results.

Our Space Station!
These are just some of the things we discussed, showed pictures and read stories around:

The Sun and all the planets around it. Why Pluto wasn't a planet anymore. Which was the biggest planet? Which planet was the coldest and which was the hottest and why? The moon and why can you see it from your window? What is gravity? Where is it?

The children wondered why the planets didn't crash into each other if they all go around the sun?

Astronauts; how do they sleep, where do they sleep? Why do they need a spacesuit?
Constellations; and how long ago people navigated by stars.

Phew! There were infinite questions and discussions on this topic, rather like space itself!

Moon Craters
Next the children made space goggles so that their eyes would be protected from the sun. We made 'stardust' in little glass jars which they were very careful at handling. One of our art activities was to create a Supernova picture where the two stars crashed together and it created a beautiful colourful scene. The childen loved making these, not sure whether it was the mess or the fact that they crashed and the effect it caused!

Moon Art
We discussed constellations and we made arrangements of different ones on the ceiling for the children to see, then we turned off all the lights and shined a flashlight on the stars which glowed in the dark. The children loved it and could point out which was the Big Dipper, Hunter, and Little Dipper. In a different part of the ceiling we created the Milky Way. They wanted to do this again and again, it's the quietest we have ever seen them because they were busy concentrating and figuring out the constellation they were looking at.

We painted our jeans for jeans week. I know there were a lot of sparkles everywhere and its always fun to decorate our jeans with sequins and as many sparkles as we can. Yes some of us went home covered in sparkles including the teachers! Thank you for your generous contributions to the Children's Hospital.

Now we will be moving on to exploring Ancient Egypt, pyramids, mummies and much more.

Please do come and see us if you have any queries or would like to know how things are going.

Busy Bees! March 2013

March has come and gone in a blur of Easter services, Spring Break, and Easter Break and we are already half way through April with no sign of slowing down! It certainly feels that a general sense of 'busy' is in the air and it is at this time of year, with the weather still predominantly chilly, rainy and zapping our energy that we need to remember to take the time to appreciate the most important things in life: our families, friends and taking care of ourselves so that we can be there for those special people when they need us most.

Easter Services
I myself have been incredibly busy with preschool commitments, university exams to study for and a very exciting move to a new home for myself and my daughters Ayla and Kaitlyn. During the move and for 2 weeks after we had no television or Internet and we never realised how used to these modern commodities we actually are.

At first we all felt a bit lost but then I noticed the imaginative play that was taking place between my daughters (in amongst the packing boxes!) and how much extra reading we were doing. It made me realise that although technology is a wonderful and necessary component in our lives, having it so readily available to my girls had stopped them from interacting with one another as much and had been more of a draw to them than sitting quietly with a good book. Truthfully it had become much more than a component, it had taken over.

Singing loud and proud!
Now that we have cable and Internet back again I am determined not to let it have such a presence in our lives. I sat down with my girls and we discussed how we could make sure that we aren't falling into old habits and we decided on one screen free night per week and more limited screen time on the other days. The funny thing is, that the girls are embracing this new minimal screen lifestyle much more easily than I am! I find myself reaching for my laptop or phone constantly and they take great pleasure in reminding me that it's "screen free night!"
Now we are spending more time playing games, cooking together, talking and reading and I have noticed a positive difference in my stress level and in the amount of quality time that I am spending with my girls.
I know that the Internet and smart phones are here to stay, and believe me I don't want to live without them, but I am realising more and more that we need to make time for those old fashioned mediums of reading and writing and talking face to face!
Performing on stage!

I truly believe that reading is one of the best things we can do with our children. Every night me and my girls sit cuddled together on the sofa, with blankets wrapped around us as we enter the world of all the wonderful characters from the minds of children's storytellers, Roald Dahl, A.A. Milne and Beatrix Potter, to name just a few. Hearing my children laugh during these stories at all the same parts I remember laughing at when I was a child is a very special feeling. I'm not really sure if we would get that same cozy feeling while looking on the Internet together, (well perhaps you can while giggling over the funny cats on youtube!) but nothing beats turning the pages of a book and hearing your mum or dad's (or grandma or uncle's..) voice doing "the voices" of your favourite story!
This month I asked our teachers to let me know some of their favourite stories to read with young children and here's what they said:

Joanna: "Lost and Found" by Oliver Jeffers
Permjit: "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr Suess
Gabi: "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" by Eric Carle
Jen: "The Alfie Treasury" by Shirley Hughes
Marion: "Storm is Coming" by Heather Tekavec
Tina: "The Big Red Barn" by Margaret Wise Brown
Estelle: "Blueberries for Sal" by Robert McCloskey
Sali: "The Mitten" by Jan Brett
Stephanie: "Love you Forever" by Robert Munsch
Vibha: "Where's Spot?" by Eric Hill
Danielle: "We love you, Little Critter!" by Mercer Mayer
Karen: "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown
Krystal: "How Full is your Bucket? For Kids" by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer
Rachel: "Pinkalicious" by Victoria Kann
Libby: "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds
Cheryl: "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev

From the Developmental Resource Office  Marion
Registration has begun for the Summer Program in July and the morning sessions are full already! There are still spots open in the afternoons (1-4pm) and you can still go on a wait-list for mornings. Registration forms will now be available from the preschool office. We are looking forward to a fun Summer with “Kings, Queens, Castles and Things” as our theme.

Wearing our Jeans in support of BC Children's Hospital!
April 22nd – 26th is Jean’s Week here at St. Catherine’s and we will be painting tiny jean cut-outs and collecting money in the upside down umbrellas in each classroom for the B.C. Children’s Hospital. Please send your child in jeans, jean skirts and jackets and lets all have fun celebrating the wonderful work the hospital does for so many children.
The lists are up outside the classrooms as to where the 4’s will be attending Kindergarten.  This is a great way to connect children with other children through play dates before September. The teachers have been working on letters and the children are encouraged to try writing their own names on art work and journals. Letter games are a fun way for children to find the letters that make up their own name. You can purchase a fun fly swatter at the Dollar Store and place letters around the house. Have a duplicate set of letters on a table and have your child take a letter and find the corresponding letter with the swatter. If you have any questions please talk to your teachers or come down to my office.

From Creative Music  Cheryl

I might have lived inside a shell if I had been a snail!
The month of March and into April was a busy time for all the children and teachers. The Easter Service is so much fun but requires a lot of practise and repetition in order for everyone to learn their songs, actions and instruments by the time of the performances. Of course everyone did a fantastic job and the services were absolutely beautiful and a great time was had by all. I am so proud of all the children, they worked so hard!
I would like to say an extra big thank you to all the teachers because without their dedication to learning all the songs and putting in the extra time outside of music classes it would not be possible to coordinate this fantastic event.
I would also like to say a huge thank you to Marion for all her behind the scenes work and tireless prop making as well as spending lots of extra time rehearsing with us, we are truly thankful for all that you do!

Gorgeous hand print spring flowers!
Spring has sprung, the butterflies and bumblebees are out, we are back at school after a short break and it is amazing how quickly the seasons change. This month we focused on farm animals and Easter. For art we used feathers for painting, stamped with animal shapes, painted with a tractor's wheels, coloured eggs and hid them in the grass and made a farm collage that included pigs in the mud, painted ducks and bunnies coloured with condensed milk!
Our circle time included books such as the "Runaway Bunny" "Little Red Hen" "5 Little Ducks" and lots of stories about the Easter Bunny. We also sang many songs; a favourite was definitely Old MacDonald had a farm and the children got so excited naming animals and making the animal sounds.

Buzzy bees and Butterflies!
We put out lots of plastic eggs which the children had fun hiding around the classroom and finding with their friends. They looked so sweet peeking behind things and putting their eggs into little baskets and never got tired of hiding them all over again. Another fun thing we did was to put shredded paper into the water table for the animals to 'nest' in!
Now that we are in April we will be talking about Spring; as always if you have any questions or concerns please talk, call or email us.

From the Rainbow Room 301  Sali, Joanna, Karen
Here we are with another month of activities and learning behind us. March was a month full of many different activities. At the beginning we finished learning about winter and all the different things we need to keep us warm when it is cold outside.

Happy Daffodils!
As we moved closer to springtime we started to learn about all the different animals that live on a farm.  We made cuddly sheep and muddy pigs! The children made footprint horses and square shaped cows. Our St. Catherine’s farmyard got full very fast with all sorts of different animals. The children also made shaving foam/puffy paint bunnies. Of course the children enjoyed singing Old MacDonald had a farm and also learning new songs like down on Grandpa’s farm, singing all about different animals that live on a farm and this song taught us to learn and think about how all the animals look or sound.

St. Catherine's Farmyard!
After Spring Break the children enjoyed talking about Easter. Everyone had fun making Easter eggs and chicks. While the children were playing outside, on the last day before the Easter Break, the Easter Bunny visited the classroom and left the children a chocolate surprise! The children had such a great time searching the classroom for the chocolate eggs left behind. Once the children had found all their eggs they enjoyed helping their friends find the remaining eggs.
Thank you for all the hard work you are doing at home in order to get your children ready for the four year old program. Just the other day we were commenting on how independent these children have become and how they are almost ready to make that great move up to their four year old class! Now is the time to reinforce these new skills with positive reinforcement and encouragement.

From the Treehouse Room 302  Rachel, Stephanie and Joanna

Wow there's only a few months left in the school year but it truly feels like it was only yesterday that we were just meeting everyone and getting to know each other and the classroom routines. Now we are watching these very grown up, confident little people ready to move up to the fours in just a few short months!

How many eggs do I have in my basket?
We been talking about Easter in our class. The children have been busy making Easter bunnies, colourful Easter eggs, and decorating colourful Easter baskets for the Easter Bunny to fill! They also enjoyed playing a game pretending to be the Easter bunny and finding chocolates.

Five little Easter eggs,
Lovely colours wore;
Mother ate the blue one,
Then there were four.

Four little Easter eggs,
Two and two, you see;
Daddy ate the red one,
Then there were three.

Three little Easter eggs,
Before I knew,
Sister ate the yellow one,
Then there were two.

Two little Easter eggs,
Oh, what fun!
Brother ate the purple one,
Then there was one.

One little Easter egg,
See me run!!!
I ate the last one,
And then there was none.

The children were also very busy practising for our Easter Services which were so much fun! We hope that you enjoyed seeing all of the children's hard work in action as well as spending time altogether for the Easter tea.

From the Treehouse Room 303/403  Vibha, Sali and Stephanie

Hoppity hop Easter was on its way! The classrooms seemed to fill up so quickly with eggs and bunnies all over! The children really enjoyed playing the Easter bunny game, where one child was the Easter bunny and had to figure out which friend was hiding their egg. For art we made chicks out of cotton pads and out of toilet paper rolls and cut out egg shapes to make chicks using out hand prints as their wings. We also talked about the life cycle of chicks and how they are born.

We experimented with a variety of different tools to decorate eggs. We used watercolours and pipettes, marble painting, and a wax candle with a watercolour finish. We used some of the eggs to put up on our "Splat the Cat" board. The children helped bring this Easter story to life!

We decorated Easter baskets, created paper bag bunnies, dyed hard boiled eggs, and baked rainbow coloured cupcakes.

We were so excited when the Easter Bunny came to visit our classroom. None of us saw him but he left us a note and a special treat inside the classroom. We each got to find 5 chocolate eggs! That was a real adventure. Some eggs were tricky to find.

We talked a little about St.Patrick's Day. The children decorated shamrocks with green glitter and tissue paper to celebrate this fun day.

Cotton Pad Chicks!
With our fours we have started our journals. Each week the children are going to draw a picture and tell us a story about what they have drawn, which we will write down in their journals. Sometimes we might let them choose what to draw or we might give them an idea. We will also give them pictures once in awhile and they can tell us what they see and what is happening. Journals are a great way for the children to express themselves and use their imagination.

As the weather is getting warmer, we will be going outside more often. Please ensure that your child has proper running shoes on, thank you!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to any of the teachers.

We can't believe how fast the school year has gone by and we are starting to think about graduation and saying goodbye to our friends as we move on to new experiences at new schools. Check out our notice board outside the classroom to see which schools everyone will be going to for Kindergarten and perhaps arrange a playdate with some children that will be going to the same one as you!

We've been doing an Easter theme in our classroom this past month and getting excited  for the Easter Bunny to come!
Hop hop hop Little bunnies!

The children have made some wonderful pieces of art for this holiday including beautiful pictures of Easter baskets with Easter eggs. For this art project the children traced their hands and cut them out to make the handles for their Easter baskets. They also made Easter bunny paper bag puppets!

A song the children really enjoyed was 5 Little Bunnies (to the tune of 5 little ducks)

5 Little Bunnies at Easter time.
Went to the carrot patch far away,
Mummy bunny called them all right back.
But only 4 of her little baby bunnies came back.

We are now conducting some science experiments in our classroom. We have a presentation board showcasing our experiments outside our classroom so take a look whenever you get the chance!

Our Bean Stalks!
Spring was in the air and it was time to begin planting. We planted Sunflower seeds in small peat pots so that when the seeds sprout, the pot can be easily planted directly into the garden. Zip lock bags became the container for our bean seeds and were stapled to our large board to be the base for our beanstalk (we never did see the giant!).
Long green caterpillars were next, made from different shades of green circles, lots of legs and eyes and covered in glue and sparkles. They were crawling around the room in no time and really made the walls look bright and cheerful. We learned that caterpillars become beautiful butterflies and we made ours from diffusing paper and watercolour paint. When the paper dried it was squished between a 'spring' clothes peg and voila - a butterfly! They joined the beans on the board and when the beans began to sprout through the top of the zip lock bag we had a living beanstalk on the wall with butterflies fluttering around it.
Bunnies, eggs and ducks were everywhere in the classroom as we began our celebration for Easter. We had great fun drawing designs on our hard-boiled eggs and then dipping them in watercolour. When they dried we put them in our Easter baskets. The Easter Bunny left a note and some clues to where he had hidden some eggs for us to find. Great fun was had as we searched in the classroom and squeals of delight were heard when the eggs were found.

Water Table fun!
Emily Carr, our famous B.C. artist was our next project. We learned about her early childhood and how lonely she was because her parents would not allow her to have friends over to play (they thought they would infect her with their germs!) Instead she had imaginary friends; a pet monkey and a dog. She drew on brown paper grocery bags because she had no drawing paper and so did we!
Emily travelled to San Fransisco, France and England to study art but always came back to her beautiful B.C. She opened an art school in downtown Vancouver and as she grew older she began to visit the Firsts Nations villages on the West Coast and this became the inspiration for the vast majority of her paintings. She had a great affinity for the West Coast First Nations people and they named her "Klee Wyk" which means "laughing one".
We began our Emily Carr art projects by making a personal totem and a native totem made from a cardboard tube, decorated with interesting bits of wood and paper. our representation of nature masks were next and then a really messy and very fun nature picture.

Space Supplies!
Next we made button blankets - miniature of course - they looked beautiful with lovely patterns and then it was on to our "Piece De Resistance" weaving with feathers, pipe cleaners, wool and raffia on a large forked branch.
Currently we are exploring Outer Space, so watch out for rockets and space stations when you enter our classroom!
Please come and talk to us if you have any questions or concerns.
